Re: Pet Peeves?

Mortgage guy asks me how many years of school I did. Er, all of them, how many are there?

I never remember how many there are, so I will always give that same response every time.

Fourteen. For future reference ...

How many do you want there to be? Perhaps better stated, how many can you afford?

Some people have made a career of collecting degrees into middle age.

14? .... Surely K+ 1 through 12 = 13? ..... Or are you just being your usual obtuse self?

I believe that question is typically asking about years of "school", as opposed to years of higher education(if any).

No, I started school in 1983 and left in 1997. Minus the three months from my last A-level in June 1997 and September (when I would have started P1) that was 14 years.

OK, I thought as much, but when that question is asked in the US it has an implied maximum of 13, because thirteen grade-years is the maximum number of years available to be completed. ..... They probably assume you were a dunce who had to repeat a year!

Time travel ...

Actually, I've never had to answer the question but I suppose saying 'from the ages of 4 - 18' would cover all bases

Must be my American English - "higher education" is "school".

Otherwise, here in the USA, the typical required education is 12 years to get a high school diploma. Grades 1-12, K doesn't count to most people. People who have graduated college (or university) with a bachelor's degree would usually answer the mortgage guy's question with '16'.

Agreed. I think you are probably right. .... With the caveat that it depends exactly the question is phrased and what other questions are asked

He was happy with my "all of them" response. I'm glad it didn't go into number of years at uni, since I did mine in the UK so it was only three years but equivalent to a US four-year degree. That either makes them think I am super smart or that the degree is crap.
