In other news, now the Scots have dogs driving on their motorways. It's no wonder that they (sort of) want their independence.

Traffic Scotland announced a disruption to the morning commute on the M74 highway, "due to dog taking control of tractor... nope, not joking." Saying that a farmer and police were at the scene, the agency added, "#maycausetailbacks" — using the term for long lines.

Is it perchance because no one told them to leave the door open to dry out after a load?

They simply have no idea what they're doing, washing wise. That's the only thing I can think of.

Habit. Most people of parenting age in North America grew up with and have only used top loading machines, and old habits are hard to break.

I like front loaders as they use less water, but personally, I don't get my clothing dirty enough to notice anything noticeable when I have used front loading washers.

If/when the time ever comes for a real machine, I'll certainly get a front loading one.

Some front loaders seem to take a long time to wash, I used one a couple years ago and it was 60 minute cycle, took forever to do laundry. But then I see some that are quick, so who knows.

The commercial front loaders at work are precisely 32 minutes for sheets and 37 minutes for towels.

Yeah, but I bet a good number of us British BE'ers grew up with mothers who used an abomination called a "twin tub", which was a top-loading contraption, and it didn't take long to realise that a newfangled front-loader was far superior.

Mrs P threatens occasionally to go back to a top-loader but at the moment has her eye on a fancy high-capacity Whirlpool washer and steam dryer set.

Maybe North American's are more stubborn or less open to change?

I wonder what they prefer in Mexico?

That thing that you had to fill manually with a hose from the sink, drain by reversing the flow out of said hose, then move clothes and hose over to a tiny spin cylinder on the other side and rinse and spin by repeatedly running clean water into the spinner and spinning it out through the clothes and then hanging the mangled result over the bath on one of these?

Yeah.

My great grandmother was still using a contraption similar to these in the 1980's.

Our neighbours still used one similar to that when we lived in Sheffield in the early 1970's. .... In fact theirs had a hand powered mangle whereas those appear to be motorized.

That makes me feel modern and sophisticated having grown up with one of these. It does normally have a lid.

My mother used it into the 1990s

Same for many here in New Zealand. If you have a front loader , you are destined for permanent curvature of the spine so the myth goes & there is that huge inconvenience of not being able to sling in that odd dirty sock one missed. Better the cold wash only top loader , so there is no bending to be done & one is free to sling said dirty sock in at any time with the near clean laundry.

True.

My Mum's twin tub hated me. It was always throwing itself around the kitchen when it was my chore to do the laundry.
