Yeah, as werid as it sounds to British ears - it does actually make some degree of sense when you think about it.

Same with 'pants' for 'trousers'. That makes the word 'underpants' start to make sense as well

Actually, it should be written 'New Year's', as a contraction for 'New Year's Day'. Otherwise it makes no sense.

Well spotted. No need to be sneaky about pedantry. I have to be held to the same high standards I expect from the rest of the plebs on here

I actually gave you 10 minutes to spot your error and correct. In future do you just want me to jump straight in?

If I don't catch it right away, I never will. Feel free to jump in any time.

I know, but it's not really used in that way.

If I think of it in that way, it makes it easier to ignore.

"I was good at maths in school. But do the math - it's a 50/50 proposition" - both usages sound good in the right context, to my ear.

compare to:

"I was good at math in school. But do the maths - it's a 50/50 proposition".

latter sentence not as good as first

as an aside, 'do the math' is a nice US phrase ...

The grammar, or the event itself?

Both, really.

I can arbitrarily assign a start/end point to the Earth's orbit at any time during the year. Dec 31/Jan 1 holds little signifigance for me beyond the fact that my wife usually buys a jumbo packet of shrimp to stuff our faces with as we watch the TV
