Actually, it should be written 'New Year's', as a contraction for 'New Year's Day'. Otherwise it makes no sense.

compare to:
"I was good at math in school. But do the maths - it's a 50/50 proposition".
latter sentence not as good as first
as an aside, 'do the math' is a nice US phrase ...

Both, really.
I can arbitrarily assign a start/end point to the Earth's orbit at any time during the year. Dec 31/Jan 1 holds little signifigance for me beyond the fact that my wife usually buys a jumbo packet of shrimp to stuff our faces with as we watch the TV
