Americans and fish

Re: Americans and fish
Used to go into our neighborhood friture in the NL and there were the herrings all laid out for the locals. YUCK.

Catfish is OK. What's bad is Carp and Buffalo. I've read that in England people fish for Carp on purpose! Here, the only people that eat Carp and Buffalo seem to be Blacks on the lower end of the income scale, kind of a Soul Food thing like chicken feet and pig snouts. Carp is popular as a bowfishing fish, but they are usually used for garden fertilizer.

Yep...nasty slimy things, taste like poo and are too mushy.
Give me a good slab of swordfish, hallibut, mahi mahi, orange roughy or seabass anytime.
I remember the fish market in San Sebastian Spain, where the octopie and squid still were moving, the fish hadn't been dead more than a few hours (if that) and you had every conceivable type of fish or seafood one could desire (except sewer trout!)

IP, don't you just love those fish markets over there? I die and go to heaven whenever I'm over on vacation.
Was on the phone to my mum the other day and asked what was for dinner. She said she was boiling a bit of pescada, with small potatoes and steamed green beans. Throw some oil and vinegar on it and the simple taste is just incredible.
I do miss my fish. We were very lucky to have outstanding fish in Africa, as well as having a load of Portuguese fish markets that imported all the great European fish too. We were very spoiled for choice.

We used to go to the Dekalb Farmer's Market for fish and produce. Also a few out on Buford Highway near 285...either Oriental or Hispanic oriented, though not as good as Dekalb.

The BEST calamari I ever had in my life was in Dubrovnik! You could walk around the harbor and see them bringing it in and then it's on your plate.
On the other hand, the ex got some kind of nasty parasite/dysentery thing from eating trout in the countryside around Sarajevo after the war. Lost 3 stone!
I'm sure it's very good to some people, but serving the wonderful bread in Portugal with sardine paste was a sacrilege. Plus they charged extra for it.
My son and his wife and inlaws off to an island in Maine for a week today. He of course had to tell me he would be having much lobster, clambakes and other items of my favorite seafood from back home.
