Can you imagine working your way up to the highest position possible in your career, only to be sentenced to work with Ted Cruz for the next twenty or so years? |

That should confound the GOP no end The real intention here is to create a common cause to get Republicans to vote. I suspect that there will be quite a few disgruntled Republicans following the convention, and the GOP will need a cause around which to rally lest a large number of them decide not to vote. This is also really an extension of birtherism: The Republicans want to believe that Obama is a foreign agent who has no authority as president, and this is just yet another bogus claim about his lack of authority to act. They'll never accept that Obama was a duly elected president, so Allah forbid that he is allowed to replace Saint Scalia. |

You have to understand that this really has almost nothing to do with the Supreme Court.

I suspect the number in the GOP base that this will fire up is less than those in the centre it will turn off. |
Re: 2016 Election
If Hillary is the Dem nominee as I expect and there is somebody half decent on the GOP side I really can not see it being that hard to rally support.

I'm sure you're right. But I have a feeling it will backfire on them, as it will also remind voters that the GOP is the party of no.

Also, the subtext here is that I suspect that the GOP nominee is going to upset a lot of social conservatives and some of them will be unhappy enough not to vote. Turning this election into a battle over the Supreme Court might be enough to keep more of them on board. |

I doubt that the middle or the left will be as fired up about this as is the right. Social conservatives have figured out that a conservative court is key to their ability to impose their values on others, and they're more excited about bullying than others are about being bullied. So this is a good issue for the GOP.

Granted, the GOP don't have much chance anyway with the way demographics are going, so perhaps this is a Hail Mary, and they hope it will work. |

Yes, but there are no way near enough conservatives for them to win the election. Showing that yet again they aren't willing to even try and govern is going to turn off the middle.

Just as a matter of history, the GOP really should be the favorite simply because the electorate tends to switch parties following a second-term candidacy (although the electoral map poses real challenges.) But the Republicans have become a fragmented party with its populist wing out of control, and I'm willing to bet that we're going to end up with a brokered convention that is engineered to keep Trump and Cruz out, which will upset their fans. The establishment doesn't like those fans very much, but it needs them if it is to have even the slightest chance of winning. It would be nice to win over swing voters but it may have to take what it can get from the base. |
Re: 2016 Election
It seems Trump may have massively lied about losing hundreds of friends on 9/11 and on donating large quantities of money to help the victims and survivors. The worst lie possible.
