Jon - a bit off topic, but where is Louis' restaurant with the marvellous ribs? We're based in Cabanas but come across to Ayamonte for day trips and golf so new restaurants are always of interest.

Louis' is in Monte Francisco. Off the m/way at Villa Real exit; turn north, first left, left at first roundabout, right at second and its about 150 yards on your left. Actually called Sao Lupi.
Enjoy.

Thanks Steve. We know Monte Francisco so will give it a try next time we're out after Easter.

This Louis isn't the same one by any chance that used to own the restaurant by the beach in Manta Rota before the large square was built is it? We've often wondered where he went because we always thought his piri piri was the best in the area.

Shouldn't this discussion be best carried out in the Restaurant thread (qv) where there is already a lot of interesting stuff about Luis's resto (and loads of others)?

Luis ran La Lota in both Ayamonte and at Isla Canela before the owner a well known lawyer in the town pulled the plug. He then took over the sports bar in Monte Fransisco and made a great success of that but it was very small so he branched out on his own with Sau & Elena front of house and a great chef and kitchen staff. Before 2003/4 he may have been in Manta Rota but he has never mentioned it but I do know he has been maitre de in hotels in Paris, London and Germany.

Even though the introduction of tolls has been suspended until after the up coming elections in Portugal the construction preparations for the tolls has gone ahead at the Eastern end of the A22. However the action groups have also been very active and a co-ordinated fire bombing raid took place on the electricity power housing. They are very keen since they took out 3 concrete structures at 03.00hrs forcing the steel doors pushing in old tyres and lighting them with an accelerant. I do not of course condone vandalism but no one was hurt and I am sure the authorities will no doubt take note of the depth of feeling.

Theres an election coming up so no doubt promises will be made by one or other party and then there may be a delay for a month or two until the great unwashed have moved on to other concerns. However you are right with the desperate state of Portugals economy they will come.

I made the journey to Faro on Wednesday - it seems you may be able to get to/from the Monte Gordo exit (second exit in Portugal towards Faro) without passing a check-point. First check-points appeared to be either side of the Tavira exit.
