Regardless of which does most damage,.....with alcohol you have your own choice,..... to risk your health or not.

.....with smoking you often suffer from other ppls.choice.

Not quite the same thing!.

You can obviously tell from this post that I am a smoker, but there is space for all of us!

One of the problems with the present situation is that of those bars and restaurants of less than 100 sq.metres that have the option to be either totally smoking or non-smoking, almost 100% have opted for smoking, leaving non-smokers with almost no clean-air choice. In fact in many towns and villages there is not a single non-smoking bar or restaurant. Bearing in mind that smokers represent well under 40% of the adult population, this is hardly reasonable and was never the aim of the legislator.
Unfortunately, the bar/restaurant lobby did a good job of scaremongering during the final drafting of the current legislation which led to the watered down version we now have.
Let's hope the new minister has the courage to push through a tougher version of the law in the next few months.

You sir... are a muppet. To think that human beings can make informed, decisive, unbiased opinions just shows how stupid you can be....

Hi Rugbymatt, whether or not human beings can or cannot make informed decisive decisions is besides the point, it should be an individuals own choice or are we all lemmings. Can't say I appreciate the muppet or the stupid part of your post though!

If I want to be controlled in every way, I would simply cease to be..........

I hardly think its the sinister big brother EU - we have had smoking bans in California and New York (amongst others States) for years.

I do believe that France now has a ban and the French are worse than the Spanish at smoking. Having sat at a table with them literally eating and smoking at the same time.

Not in California and New York - you need to treat individual States like individual countries in the US, they are very different.

Let me assure you that LA, San Fran or NYC are hardly boring places.

No one can defend the levels of obesity in the US, but I would say that the food companies conspire against the populace in their desire to shift sales - the second listed item in a normal loaf of wholemeal bread is sugar (or high fructose corn syrup - same thing)

I used to work for a company that collated info for surveys and studies and it was known that France and Spain have the highest levels of smokers in Europe and had done for several years and they also had the lowest incidence of Heart disease and cancer, this was known as "the French Paradox". However, since they introduced fastfood chains, ready meals, processed foods etc, their levels of heart disease, cancer and waistlines are rising.

When we were in San Francisco we went to get a meal at 9pm or so and every restaurant we went to seemed to be closing and when we did find one we went back to our hotel afterwards and went to get a drink at the hotel bar and it had closed as well.

Try this for an interesting line on how smokers are exploited.
