What's up rugbymatt, aren't there enough non smoking bars and restaurants for you to frequent? Surely it should be up to the punters and the business owners if they prefer a smoking or non smoking enviroment, spain at the moment is one of the few countries to treat people like adults and give them the choice, if you see a sign on the door smoking permitted and you don't like it then go somewhere else. You can obviously tell from this post that I am a smoker, but there is space for all of us!
Unfortunately, the bar/restaurant lobby did a good job of scaremongering during the final drafting of the current legislation which led to the watered down version we now have. Let's hope the new minister has the courage to push through a tougher version of the law in the next few months. iant |

Re: SMOKING BAN EXTENSION
Hi Rugbymatt, whether or not human beings can or cannot make informed decisive decisions is besides the point, it should be an individuals own choice or are we all lemmings. Can't say I appreciate the muppet or the stupid part of your post though!

I don't know about you, but I prefer freedom any day. If I want to be controlled in every way, I would simply cease to be.......... |
Re: SMOKING BAN EXTENSION
I do believe that France now has a ban and the French are worse than the Spanish at smoking. Having sat at a table with them literally eating and smoking at the same time.

No one can defend the levels of obesity in the US, but I would say that the food companies conspire against the populace in their desire to shift sales - the second listed item in a normal loaf of wholemeal bread is sugar (or high fructose corn syrup - same thing) |
Re: SMOKING BAN EXTENSION
I used to work for a company that collated info for surveys and studies and it was known that France and Spain have the highest levels of smokers in Europe and had done for several years and they also had the lowest incidence of Heart disease and cancer, this was known as "the French Paradox". However, since they introduced fastfood chains, ready meals, processed foods etc, their levels of heart disease, cancer and waistlines are rising.

Not in California and New York - you need to treat individual States like individual countries in the US, they are very different.

Try this for an interesting line on how smokers are exploited.
