I have just read that the Spanish Government are considering extending the smoking ban to all public places irrespective of size.

It was inevitable as the previous law was completely ignored and not enforced.
Whether anyone will take any notice of a total ban remains to be seen but if the police ignore it again, then nothing will change.

Seriously, I'm an ex smoker, but I hope they dont extend it. Its absolutely fine as it is .... common sense prevailed, unlike in the UK.

As Sp gets such great weather, sitting outside for a ciggie will not bother most people..in Winter maybe a few will get a bit cool popping out there, but 2mins to smoke a ciggie is not too bad....i do wonder how many extra policemen will be needed to enforce this law..think it will just be a threat to bar/cafe/restaurants owners.. if police do find smoking on your premises you will for go your licence.. this will be enough to push them into keeping within the law..

The situation in spain at the moment seems to work so why change it? Its funny but all anyone ever seems to get from Europe is orders, laws and regulations. (which is another thread in itself!)

From: That, there, that's not my post count... nothing to see here, move along.

Great news, absolutely great news, at last some lateral thinking from a government. Well done, hopefully this drain on our resources will be put to death like the filthy dirty habit it is.

from what ive seen the spanish, esp the men, smoke more than the English - makes e laugh when you see all the smokers in winter over here, standing outside freezing to death like a load of lepers with icicles on their noses

Not that I care either way, but listening to the media and the rantings of Daily Mail readers, I was under the impression that it had been a disaster in the UK too. Until I went back, spoke to some old colleagues and friends in the business, also friends affected by the ban and I found that what I had been led to believe was in fact greatly exaggerated. Fair enough, it is churlish to say that there has been no effect whatsoever, but some of t hem noted a change in approach to the business, not necessarily a downurn.
I was therefore pleased to see this view reinforced by an article from the BBC about a fortnight ago. http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereport..._are_evol.html
The interesting stat there I found was that only 11% of current smokers say they visit the pub less than before the ban. Hardly the stuff of a complete failure or an 'unwise move'?

And the alcoholics? The drain on resources that causes? Shall we ban that as well?

What's the country coming to? They'll have a law to stop at pedestrian crossings next.
