I remember the first 'working day' after the ban came into force
I saw the local pharmacist smoking outside his shop!! I asked him if he would stop smoking now - he said probably because he couldn't afford the time to keep going outside Love it. I was in the local social security office last week and it was completely smoke free. If I had gone in a few years ago it was have been horrendous. So for me it is a big step forward. However as I said I don´t mind the little bars having smoking because I would know not to go into them. Our local taperia allows smoking and normally I would stay away but the food is so fantastic and cheap, I suffer for my stomach. |

Exactly the opposite has happened in a local restaurant. The owner has banned smoking recently to get the ball rolling but because the food is so good he has had no complaints and he is just as busy. The choice to enter is yours.:D thats the nail hit on head for this thread i reckon. CHOICE i fully agree that non smokers shouldnt have to breathe in fumes if they dont want to as they HAVE A CHOICE, and i agree smoking on public transport and in public buildings should stay banned, good on them, but bars and pubs, NO!!!!!!!! if some of you want to live in a big brother society i suggest you move back to blighty!!!!!! (I mean that light heartedly by the way) |

Great news, absolutely great news, at last some lateral thinking from a government. Well done, hopefully this drain on our resources will be put to death like the filthy dirty habit it is.
"According to the Netherlands National Institute for Public Health and Environment, which found that while "a person of normal weight costs on average 210,000 pounds over their lifetime", a smoker clocks up just 165,000 pounds and the obese run up an average 187,000 pound bill." Jim |

(I mean that light heartedly by the way) Alcohol - through irresponsibilty - can be deadly to others. Death by a drunk driver etc..... There are laws that exist that punish those drinkers who inflict harm on others because they are enjoying their 'habit'. Why should smokers be any different? Through the enjoyment of their habit they are harming others, yet go unpunished. A pub by its very definition is a public space to be enjoyed by all. However if a section of the people enjoying that space are inflicting harm on the others should they not be regulated so that it continues to be a space for all to enjoy? As for Spain, the total ban was inevitable from day one as the government - in its typical socialist fashion - fudged the whole thing by trying to please everyone and ending up pleasing no-one. By making an ambiguous set of rules attached to the ban with loads of loopholes, the bars were never really going to comply. The only way for a ban to work in Spain is a total ban. All or nothing. This halfway house is a joke. |

Passive smoking, so science tells us, is a serious health risk. A non-smoker did not make that choice, it was inflicted on them.

Re: SMOKING BAN EXTENSION
I am naughty and I do smoke. However it does not bother me not being able to smoke in public places. I dont smoke when i am walking around town as it looks quite chavvy.
However in my own home and round friends i have no problem with having a nice ciggie and a gin and tonic xxx :) |
Re: SMOKING BAN EXTENSION
On our shopping trip yesterday, we went to one of those giant Malaysian WOK places, the size of a football pitch, spotlessly clean and serving excellent quality food. We enjoyed our meal there, totally free of smoke, and had the entire place to ourselves.
After the shopping, we went to a small Spanish bar, just around the corner from the WOK, packed full of smokers inside, but we enjoyed the excellent quality coffee on the terrace outside. The terrace was packed too, with a mix of smokers and non-smokers, extremely happy people enjoying their freedom of choice. |

Even though i like to smoke I would not inflict it on anyone who did not. xx:) |
Re: SMOKING BAN EXTENSION
If anyone wants to smoke in my house, I provide them with an ashtray, but i do insist that the windows and doors are open, which they are anyway.

Re: SMOKING BAN EXTENSION
It does all come down to individual choice. So when smokers visit they have the choice of the front or back terrace so that my grandchildren are left with the choice of inhaling clean air until they decide otherwise.:D

Re: SMOKING BAN EXTENSION
I really dont mind others smoking in a bar, as i wouldnt spend long enough in one for it to do me any harm, but i hate the smell on my clothes
But heres a guy i just read about in a news article - obviously in the USA, who has taken smoking a bit too far...............Talk about "cool for cats" "A man who tried to mellow out his cat by stuffing her into a homemade bong is facing criminal charges—and catcalls from animal lovers. Authorities cited a 20-year-old man on suspicion of animal cruelty Sunday after catching him smoking marijuana from a contraption that had a cat stuffed inside its 12-inch by 6-inch base. The man told Lancaster County sheriff's deputies the 6-month-old female named Shadow had been hyper and that he was trying to calm her down. The cat was taken to the Capital Humane Society, where she appeared to be in good condition Monday, executive director Bob Downey said. " |
