Come on, smokers exploited! I am feeling so sad. I also wouldn´t believe anything the adamsmith institute said. They are more right wing than Maggie.

In fact in many towns and villages there is not a single non-smoking bar or restaurant. Bearing in mind that smokers represent well under 40% of the adult population, this is hardly reasonable and was never the aim of the legislator.
Unfortunately, the bar/restaurant lobby did a good job of scaremongering during the final drafting of the current legislation which led to the watered down version we now have.
Let's hope the new minister has the courage to push through a tougher version of the law in the next few months.

I am not saying that smoking is a good thing, and as rugbymatt says it a dirty disgusting habit, I do not want to impose my bad life style on clean air lovers, but i do think that common sense should prevail, you say that under40% of the adult population smokes, i will not disagree with you, but i will say that the percentage of people who frequent bars, not just for an occasional drink, is a far higher percentage, otherwise why do all the bars (its their livelyhoods) decide, now that they have the choice to remain smoking bars.
Smokers are normal people with a bad habit! and spain at the moment is the only country that offers some sort of choice. I for one would like to have a choice.

You mean Hobsons choice?
As has been mentioned, many areas, small towns and villages,my own included, dont have any no smoking bars.

Doesnt seem much of a choice to me!........

I know of only 2 here. Luckily plenty of places to sit outside.
In fact I was discussing this with my friends last week. They think that a ban will come into place at some point, but could be 10years. or more.

One of my friends told me a funny story. He is a profesor and has been teaching for many years in Santiago. When he first started he said he used to light up a cigarrette and maybe have a few during the lesson. However, he also told me the students smoked in the lesson aswell!
This was around 1981 he told me. Now he has to smoke outside in rainy galicia and he´s pissed off!

The early eating habit does take a bit of getting used to after living in Spain :) its pretty strange when people want to meet up for dinner starting at 6pm - that said I know plenty of places you can still order food after 11pm.

Great news, absolutely great news, at last some lateral thinking from a government. Well done, hopefully this drain on our resources will be put to death like the filthy dirty habit it is.

Little to do with government more of a European Union directive to which hopefully will be ignored and replaced with compomise.

Same thing here in Western Australia except people are preparing for bed around 9pm.

You say that but there is widespread support for the ban here and the Gov is now thinking of extending it into more areas......

Brilliant news I say!

What would be interesting is whether a ban as in the UK would actually be adhered to by the Spanish people who seem to flout most laws and regulations if they dont like em (certainly around here) ie.. the number of entire families all piled onto one motorbike without crash helmets, quad bikes, no seatbelts in cars, mobile phones while driving, overtaking when there are signs not to, driving down one way streets the wrong way.... the list is endless and all these things are very common.

In fact, changing the subject slightly, I think the governement would be better off spending the money they would use banning smoking by getting some of the stray and potentially dangerous dogs off the street! I think they are far more of a risk to health... theyre rampant at the mo in our area! Thats the trouble with these EU directives, they dont take into account different countries individual issues!!!

We have had three Spanish families stay in the last 6 months here Jo, including, strangely enough, a Spanish family who were over here to see if it was good for them to move to here!!!!

All of the adults were more than happy to go outside to smoke, one of the couples both smoked and did say they were worried about leaving their kids unattended while they smoked, and I have the opportunity to say to them....

"Children are actually allowed outside here in England"

EDIT: The worse Europeans who come to stay are the Germans, one actually refused to listen and sparked up his cigar.

I wonder if they'll feel the same when the weather over there turns cold and wet!!! And I always think it looks so unsightly having people standing outside of pubs etc all night and not pleasant for passers by or the local nieghbours!
