High Miss N, Avg will sort out any viruses, make sure you update it before you run it!
If you are using a Router on Broadband, you Should be ok without using Zone alarm. If you download the others, I think you will be surprised to see what has got into the laptop.
http://free.grisoft.com/ for AVG
http://www.zonealarm.com/store/conte...eeDownload.jsp
for free Zone Alarm
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php for Ad-Aware
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html For Spybot.
Run them individually, starting with AVG.
Any probs, shout!
Tim

Hi Tim,interested to read your post........I have AGV anti-spyware,AGV antiviros, Spybot search and destroy and CCleaner, do you think I may be better to use your suggested Adware instead of the AGV antiviros ???? I have a built in firewall on my XP system.Everythings been running fine anyway since Iv downloaded these.Cheers.........

Ad-Aware should be used as well as AVG antivirus but not such a good idea using it alongside AVG anti-spyware.
XP's built in firewall only stops or finds incoming problems. Zone Alarm blocks both ways.
Hope this helps

Hi, C Cleaner is a useful alternative, but can end up removing things like favourites and history that you may want to keep.

On mine I use .......
Router firewall
XP firewall
BHOdemon
AVG free
SUPERAntispyware
Running in the background continuously and will catch stuff as it comes in.
Adaware
Spybot
A squared
AVG anti spyware
Crapcleaner
Loaded also, when I run these one at a time, they all pick up and remove different nasties if there are any there that have slipped past the others, and I can recomend any or all of them.
It may seem a bit "shy anne" with so many pairs of knickers, but they are all free and all work well, you can never be too carefull on the net.
I could not believe how much crap showed on A squared the first time I used it.
If you have AVG anti virus, go into test center, then Scheduler and you can set when you want to pick up the updates and run scans at the time convenient to you, or disable them and run manually whenever. You dont really want it scanning when you first switch on.

A few of them are the same type of program, but they do pick up different things.
As long as you have a firewall, antivirus, antispyware to be safe on the net and something like Crapcleaner to remove all the unused junk off so the PC runs to its best.
Dont forget to defrag every now and again also, Diskeeper lite is excellent and also a freebie.

My desktop pc is slow and the hourglass freezes a lot so I did a full degrag a couple of days ago and a disc clean, still has it's off moments though. I may take a look at the programmes on your list and see if any of those help, there is probably a load of C**p in there as it is 6 years old

Download and run crapcleaner, it is safe to use, click check for updates on rhs, then click run cleaner on rhs, let it run then click issues on lhs, then click scan for issues, click fix seleted issues, a window will open, click yes, save, that saves a backup before it deletes anything.
That will clear all the rubbish files etc out.
