Re: A Life in the UK or Spain?
Not forgetting the way the spanish are changing life in britain, too.
British Airport Authority are owned by a spanish construction company O2 are owned by Telefonica a large chunk of the british banking industry is owned by Santander It's increasingly unrealistic to think / expect that countries (and obviously) their peoples don't have an effect on other countries, and their peoples. I have a sneaking suspicion that the individuals (of whatever nationality) who object to this are really just resistant to change - no matter what form it takes. Nationalism / xenophobia is just the most visible manifestation of it. |

Not me, your generalising:thumbdown: I speak Spanish ,employ them and socialise with them and never use Brit bars, resturants, shops etc:thumbsup:
The EU DID/IS STILL TRYING to drag Spain into the 21st century Of course I'm generalising, isnt that the point of the whole thread! Once someone looks at individual stories of immigrants (like that of manamama's) you'll find they're not such scary people after all. All I'm saying is the same goes for Brits in Spain as for Asians in the UK. |

Most of this thread is discussing immigrants who are geniune and choosing to move for a better/different life. It's all getting cross purposed. |
Re: A Life in the UK or Spain?
I think it is as simple as this. An immigrant should remember that they are a guest, and a guest should do their best to fit in and not make a nuisance of themselves.
A host should remember that guests are at a disadvantage, and allowances should be made for them. A guest should not take advantage of that and abuse the help offered. |

Good advice Bil but what about EU citizens, we are not guests in any EU country.
The UK has had some blindingly stupid policies concerning immigrants. We should have insisted long ago that immigrants had to be able to support themselves, learn the language and stay out of trouble, and if not, - out you go. |

Well, I remember to listening to one person in Spain who was bitching on about the immigrants in the UK who didn't speak English etc etc etc.
Needless to say she spoke no Spanish. Ahhh, how I love the smell of irony in the mornings....... Give me a break. The only reason there aren't more brits in Spain is because they can't afford to live here, and yet many still come over hoping to find scraps and work dead end jobs that pay 5 Euros an hour just so that they can "live in the sun". Then they come and complain on these boards endlessly about how Spain is not foreigner friendly and they can't get a job etc.. as though it is their birth right. And yet they all claim to being trying to "integrate into Spanish life". How many of you speak fluent Spanish? Sure, some Brits do try and integrate, but the majority don't. And yet, it is these ones that don't, who complain the loudest about immigrants back home. |
