Might be helpful if you put forward your rationale rather than "not true". #

I thought it was Mandarin Chinese at number 1? Spanish second and English third?

Spanish and English often change places dependent upon whose statistics you look at. If you look at primary and secondary speakers added together English usually come second with Spain third.

But this is the spoken language. If you add in other communication methods the whole thing changes as Mandarin is normally confined to China.

Re: A Life in the UK or Spain?

Ive been here in Spain for 12 years and Im returning back to the uk in little over 7 weeks for good. I actually have full time work here too and I guess some people do need to follow work so for me to return to the uk is a big big decision for me.

Why am I going?

I came here when Benidorm was buzzing. I was 24 years old, went out most nights, met loads of friends who lived and moved here and also met my now ex girlfriend here who I stayed with for 5 years. 12 years on all of my friends have moved back one by one. Infact the last of my friends moved back only 3 weeks ago and he was a singer over here earning 100 euros a night.
Benidorm isnt the same anymore. Its very quiet, I dont go out anymore, well not really and ive been seperated from my ex for 2 months. Like I say I do have work here but I dont think now it's enough to keep me here. All my friends and family are back in the uk and ive met some lovely people who I can go and visit when im back home on weekends.
I understand that England isnt the same but the people who have moved moved home dont regret it at all. Infact one girl who moved home 2 months ago emailed me last week saying she was having a ball and that it will be a good move for me when im back. I do know that when im back Ill probably regret the move but I do feel it is for the best. Im 37 now and need a career which I dont have. I dont own property here so i dont have any real ties and my job is the only thing thats keeping me here.

Time is ticking. I have to hand my notice in within the next 2 weeks and im scared, really scared but I know I have to do this because it will be hard at first but surely things will fall into place eventually once im home in Blighty.!!

At least you can say you´ve done it and you haven´t failed either, you´re just making a choice. When things pick up again at least you have the option to return if you want to and it´ll be far easier for you than other newbies coming over. Best of luck with whatever your decision. :fingerscrossed:

Hey, your'er just 37 years old, just a spring chicken, you have had an adventure and now your are tuning onto a new page. Your might have some knowledge of Spanish which your can use in any capacity in the UK, a whole new career beckons.

:thumbup:Be positive, things are not too rosy here, not too much sun here either but take it from me if you of working age the UK is far, far better than Spain. You will contribute your taxes and in due course might even get a pension to retire in Spain!

Can I just say, why do these forums always turn into slanging matches? The history of the world proves that human beings can never just agree to disagree! Nobody knows which language will be spoken the most by 2060, for example, but let's face it, few of us will be here to find out, and who gives a monkeys anyway?! Perhaps more people speak Mandarin Chinese, but that's cos they have a huge population, slightly more than Blighted, oops, Blighty, the US of A and other ex-colonies put together. It doesn't really matter. What is important is that people make an effort to speak the language of the country they live in, it's simple respect and also makes life much easier, surely? I live on the Costa del Sol and despite the reputation it has I genuinely feel like I am living in SPAIN, not Blackpool-in-Spain like some people apparently call it. That's because I speak Spanish, chat to Spanish people when out and about, go to Spanish bars and restaurants (as well as English places from time to time, I'm no snob), go to Spanish festivals and theatre, send my son to a Spanish school, watch both Spanish and English TV, etc etc. I am lucky that I am fluent in Spanish (it took work but I love languages so no problem for me). I don't bang on about being "integrated" and ignore other Brits as if they will somehow make me feel less integrated, I just feel like I am a useful part of society here as I make an effort to be. A lot has been said on this thread about integration but if you genuinely don't want to integrate, then that's fine too. Each to their own...
