Re: Gibraltar
4 yrs ago our new office was right next to the old HK airport and I lived right next to Victoria Harbour but I don't remember seeing sea birds there except when there was a storm, The sea was pretty filthy. That was definitely one dodgy airport with mountains to the North and HK island to the South.

Picardo asks UN to support Gibraltar or 'tell us why you won't'
Author: GBC
Date: 16 June 2014 at 06:02
Gibraltar has been addressing the United Nations’ (UN) Committee on Decolonisation (the ‘C24’) since 1963, yet in the eyes of this intergovernmental organisation – set up to promote international co-operation – the Rock remains a colony. The UN effectively tells the international community Gibraltar is under the political control of the United Kingdom.
Gibraltar’s political leaders argue Gibraltarians have the right to self-determination and desire peaceful co-existence with Spain.
Today, Fabian Picardo has addressed the UN at its headquarters in New York City, arguing once again that the C24 should support Gibraltar because “that is what you are created to do – or tell us why you won’t without pretending that you can’t.”
The Chief Minister concluded: "Support us with the things that are in your power: a visit; attendance at our symposium; organisation of one of your next seminars in our territory; or even by seeking – at last - an Advisory Opinion from the International Cout of Justice on our right to self determination.
"Support us because that is what you are created to do – or tell us why you won’t without pretending that you can’t."
Below is the Chief Minister’s address in full; Mr Picardo dedicated it to the memory of David Eade, “political journalist, socialist and friend” who passed away at the weekend.

Gibraltar's decolonisation process in 'limbo' says SDGG
Author: GBC
Date: 16 June 2014 at 06:48
The Self-Determination for Gibraltar Group (SDGG) has again addressed the UN Committee of 24 (C24) as a petitioner, imploring the C24 to give Gibraltar “all the assistance required to achieve this objective (decolonisation) in keeping with your UN mandate”.
The SDGG Chairman Dennis Matthews told the C24 he is puzzled that some aspects of the UN’s decolonisation process appear to carry great urgency, but come to a standstill when it comes to Gibraltar. He said the Rock’s call to be decolonised has been “relegated… to a state of limbo”.

Lidington says UK will defend Gib EU rights
Britain will “vigorously support all of Gibraltar’s rights under the EU treaties” David Lidington, Minister for Europe, has said in the Commons.
Gibraltar Chronicle - The Independent Daily First Published 1801
Shame he doesn't go to Madrid and Brussels to say that, or even at the frontier

Re: Gibraltar
My dad landed there many times and there was a saying on the flight deck that you were not allowed to land at Kai Tak unless you had done it before. Mind, he had just flown from a weekly trip to Vietnam, in the 60's, so I suppose anything was safe after that!

Gibraltar: Spain
Questions
Asked by Lord Hoyle
To ask Her Majesty’s Government why Royal Air Force aircraft flying to Gibraltar cannot fly over Spain; what cost that adds to the flight; and what representations they have made to the government of Spain about the restriction.[HL40]
The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Defence (Lord Astor of Hever): All requests to Spanish authorities by any nation for a military over flight that has Gibraltar as a departure or arrival airfield, is routinely denied by Spanish authorities. We make clear to the Spanish government that this is not the sort of arrangement close allies should have to manage.
The military aircraft that routinely fly to Gibraltar are the Hercules C130 and C17 Globemaster. The difference in cost of a direct flight to Gibraltar from, for example, RAF Brize Norton and a route not overflying Spain is as follows.
C130 - £2,600 each way
C17 - £4,900 each way
It should be noted that Spanish authorities are swift and cooperative in allowing our military aircraft to pass through Spanish airspace to any other destination. The refusal to use their airspace to access Gibraltar is an irritant that we have managed since the 1980s,

Re: Gibraltar
Government gives details of dossier to U.N. on Spanish aggression
Author: GBC
Date: 22 June 2014 at 11:58
The Government has given details of an 100 page dossier it’s formally submitted to the United Nations, outlining the campaign of hostility and aggression that Gibraltar is subjected to by Spain. This follows the questioning by the Spanish Government of the accuracy of the statements made by the Chief Minister to the UN’s fourth Committee in October.
In a letter to the Fourth Committee Chairman, the Spanish Government had declared that Mr Picardo’s statement’s were unacceptable because they contained flagrant falsehoods and serious insults.
Ahead of last week’s visit to New York, the Deputy Chief Minister wrote to both the chairman of the Fourth Committee and to the Chairman of the Committee of 24. A dossier of appropriate evidence was attached in each case to prove to the Committee that what it had been told was not false. It tackles the question of incursions by Spanish State vessels into Gibraltar waters, the deliberate delays at the frontier and the jet ski incident, where shots were reportedly fired by the Civil Guard. The dossier includes statistical data, photographic and video evidence as well as press reports.
Doctor Joseph Garcia tells the United Nations that the reality is that the present Spanish Government has embarked on a campaign of bullying, aggression and hostility against Gibraltar not seen since the days of the dictator, General Franco. He adds Gibraltar is a small, non self governing territory and that as such he believes it’s the UN’s duty to ensure that the bullying comes to an end. In his letter, he describes as absurd the Spanish proposition that Gibraltar has no territorial waters and points out it’s a United Nations Coventiom on the law of the sea that gives 12 miles of territorial sea to every coastal territory. Dr Garcia also goes on to say that the situation has not improved at the frontier despite recommendations made to the UK and Spain by the European Commission’s mission last year. He concludes that this coercion and hostility is tantamount to a campaign of economic sanctions against a small non self governing territory.

Re: Gibraltar
Yes a suspect parcel was seen near the North barrier just before 8 am
Road closed to all traffic and bomb squad bought in
Controlled explosion then road opened at 9 am.
I was watching on the frontier camera.
It was a bit like the start of the London marathon and Le Mans combined with thousands of motorcycles on a death wish
No news as yet as to what was in the parcel.
