Picardo slams UN’s ‘deliberate inaction’ over Gibraltar
Chief Minister Fabian Picardo has accused the Committee of 24 of ‘conspiring with Spain’ against the interests of the people of Gibraltar.
Mr Picardo, addressing the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonisation in New York yesterday, said Spain’s ‘spurious claims’ to Gibraltar’s sovereignty had influenced the Committee in an ‘entirely inappropriate manner’.
As arguments were made for and against Gibraltar’s removal from the UN’s list of 17 remaining non-self governing territories, the Chief Minister, in a powerful and passionate defence of the people of such territories everywhere, said the Committee was betraying the rights of the very people it is constituted to protect.
“And that betrayal will not be allowed by us to pass unchallenged or unnoticed,” he said.

Spain hits back at ‘slanderous accusations’
Spain accused Gibraltar of “unilateral and irresponsible” actions during a speech to the UN yesterday, attacking its “slanderous accusations” against the Committee of 24.
Responding to the address by Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, a representative of Spain’s Permanent Mission to the UN, Francisca Pedros, set out the traditional Spanish position on territorial integrity and calling for calling for bilateral sovereignty dialogue between the UK and Spain.
She described the relationship between Gibraltar and the United Kingdom as “colonialism by consent”
“We would not be here talking about Gibraltar if it were otherwise,” she said

The Government has announced that it has successfully negotiated a settlement with Obrascon Huarte Lain SA (OHL) to complete the runway tunnel. Number Six says that only will this settlement avoid further delays by requiring the contractor to complete the tunnel by 30th November 2018, it will do so at a price close to the original 2008 budget. The Government adds that the completion contract “explicitly specifies that any delay to the contracted completion date would immediately incur financial penalties to be paid to Government by OHL.”
Number Six says that this settlement therefore provides Government and the taxpayer with the certainty of a completion date and also with certainty of cost.

Government wins Airport Access Tunnel claim against OHL
The High Court of Justice of England and Wales has today ordered that OHL, the company whose contract was terminated in 2011 by the previous GSD Government, now pay the Government the completion costs of the project, the largest claim for damages in Gibraltar’s history.
The judgement delivered by Mr Justice Ackenhead at the High Court of Justice rules that the Gibraltar Government was correct in the way it terminated the Contract with OHL in the summer of 2011. It is now entitled to recover all costs associated with the termination and completion costs of the project, over and above OHL’s original contract price. The price at tender was just over £30 million.
Further legal hearings are now expected to determine the exact amount which OHL will have to pay, but it could be up to an extra £60 million, plus damages. The Government is also looking to recover its substantial legal costs.

Re: Gibraltar 2
The Committee of 24 comprises a bunch of seat-warmers interested in nothing but their own comfort and vanity. I don't think anybody takes them seriously. The Spanish government is just grandstanding. Mr Picardo should maybe consider publicly commending independence for Catalunya/Catalonia!

“Furthermore, the UK will not enter into a process of sovereignty negotiations with which Gibraltar is not content.”
Mr Lidington was speaking after Spain’s acting Foreign Minister, José Manuel García-Margallo, again said Spain would seek joint sovereignty over Gibraltar.
“It’s a complete change of outlook that opens up new possibilities on Gibraltar not seen for a very long time,” Sr García-Margallo said in a television interview analysing the Brexit vote.
“I hope the formula of co-sovereignty – to be clear, the Spanish flag on the Rock – is much closer than before.”

Franco ‘very worried’ about Brexit impact on La Linea
La Linea mayor Juan Franco admitted yesterday that he was “very, very worried” about the impact of the Brexit vote on cross-border workers and businesses in the Spanish town.
“We have to hope that this difficult situation is going to be redressed in a sensible solution, in a way that maintains the same economic level for Gibraltar.”

Re: Gibraltar 2
Plans are afoot for Britain and Gibraltar to establish a common market, as part of the options being considered in the wake of the EU referendum.
A common market would be welcomed by Gibraltar because it would guarantee that business would continue with the all-important UK market - a fillip for the gaming and financial sectors.
