Britain protests over ‘dangerous’ incursion by Spanish survey ship
A Royal Navy speedboat received a blow from a heavy oceanographic probe as it tried to prevent a Spanish survey ship from taking readings in British waters yesterday.
No one was injured in the incident but the actions of the Spanish ship were described as “reckless and dangerous” and drew a rapid diplomatic protest from the British Government.
Within hours of the events at sea yesterday, the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office had
lodged a formal protest at senior level with the Spanish Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Madrid.
“We have protested the incursion directly to the Spanish authorities at a senior level, making clear that such violations of the UK’s sovereignty are unacceptable,” said a spokesman for The Convent.
Mr Picardo said the fact that the incident was unfolding as authorities in Gibraltar held a minute’s silence for the victims of the terror attack in Tunisia demonstrated “extraordinary crassness” and “an unforgiveable lack of common decency”.

Social media campaign launched to unify Gibraltar with La Linea as independent republic
A CAMPAIGN to unify Gibraltar with La Linea as an independent republic is gathering steam on social media. Streamlined-Straits-Solution-for-Gibraltar-Proves-Successful-in-2012
The ‘Referendum adhesion a Gibraltar’ Facebook group has gained 480 likes since it was launched a week ago, stirring up debate on both sides of the border.
The campaign was launched by Spanish La Linea residents who are fed up with being portrayed in the media as a drug trafficking and smuggling route.
They now want to find out how many others would be in favour of turning their back on Madrid and joining with Gibraltar.

Spain complains over survey ship ‘harassment’
The Spanish Government has made a formal diplomatic protest to Britain over last week’s incident with the survey vessel Ángeles Alvariño.
The Spanish protest – in the form of a written note verbale – came after the UK complained to Spain about the actions of the survey ship, which is operated by Spain’s oceanographic institute. In the exchange, Britain and Spain accused each other of endangering navigational safety in the bay.

The mind boggles at the number of times Spain has surveyed those particular waters.
Do they think the sea bed in that area is covered in gold bullion or maybe they are still searching for their navy ?

Picardo takes issue with Montoro on taxation
Gibraltar is at the “vanguard of compliance” with international standards and requirements on tax transparency and cooperation, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo has told Spain’s Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro in a letter.
Mr Picardo was reacting to reports that Sr Montoro would question why Gibraltar was not included on the European Commission’s blacklist of tax havens.
In the letter, he reminded the Spanish minister that Gibraltar had implemented international information exchange agreements and had been found by the OECD to be ‘largely compliant’, the same rating as the UK
and Germany. Likewise it was committed to transposing the EU’s 4th anti-money laundering directive “well before the deadline”.
The Chief Minister had already written to Sr Montoro in June 2013 to explain in detail Gibraltar’s compliance with all EU and international requirements on tax transparency and cooperation.
At the time, the Chief Minister also set out Gibraltar’s desire to enter into a tax information exchange agreement with Spain
