Re: Expats Heating Allowance - Justified?
Some of the quotes such as the last one from Mitzy do not add to the arguement.
No one forced any of us to move from the UK to buy or live in Spain , Portugal etc. We did so because we believe that our lifestyles will be better. Personally I do not think that anyone who leaves the UK should receive universal benefits like WFA, I know of some who abuse the UK NHS by having a rental property as their UK address so that they can still enjoy free dental treatment etc flying back to the UK 2/3 times a year for check ups at the UK tax payers expense. The majority of the UK population would swop places with most of us tomorrow, so stop complaining about what you get or do not get from the UK. |

To all I apologise profusely for not using the 'quote' button.
But do you think it is right that such money is being paid when expats are not even being treated? |

I paid in my NI and took exceedingly little out of it over the decades, I now receive my pension as defined by the Government, with the WFA as demanded by the EU. I am grateful for what I get perhaps they will provide me with a free feed to this UKTV everyone is shouting about  |

Whilst we would all like a higher pension I would make the point that all expats know what is before they leave the UK and therefore cannot complain afterwards. With regard to the EU raiding accounts they could not do it to the UK because we are not members of the Euro. I never said I want a higher state pension myself. I do however have a number of elderly relatives and for some of them it is a real stretch existing on the pathetically low amount they receive. Something wrong there . They fought and suffered through WW2. I think you may be making a reference to the fact that (bizarrely) if you emigrate to some countries the state pension is frozen despite the fact that you paid into the system for(in many cases) a whole life. That is just plain wrong. Doesn't affect me. I hope you are around on the forum in five years time to report back on the "secure position of UK bank accounts". What a laugh. When the chips are down, the only place to get money from is Joe Public. The Argentinians did it in 2000,New Zealand is currently considering it. What makes the Uk any different? My firm prediction is that the UK will be IN the Euro within five years if it still exists. They had the opportunity to do something about the escalating debt in the current Parliament but dithering Dave didn't. Pity. |

I am interested to hear how you retired expats can justify being paid this allowance. I would argue that only residents in the UK should be entitled to it. You chose to move abroad so all you should get is your pension and nothing else!

it's swings & roundabouts & I'd guess that since the older you get the more likely you are to have health issues the UK is getting its money's worth.... |

Well, I have to say you are trolling. You obviously have no regard for the big picture and just want to wind people up ... which wont work because people will see you for what you are. We're used to having digs thrown at us by the UK media and people who are in the UK.
At the end of the day, I really dont care for the "I'm all right Jack" view of things. Spanish expats get healthcare on the UK, UK pensioners get healthcare in Spain. Its the EU ... get used to it :);) |

Trolling on this site is not tolerated. We define trolling as any inflammatory threads or posts that are started with the sole intent of upsetting or antagonizing other members. Anyone found making such posts will be removed from the forums. If you honestly dont think that as a new member, coming onto an expats forum and attacking the members rights to a benefits that they are quite entitled to isn't going to raise hackles, then you most certainly are being a little blinkered. And now I'm pathetic ... well, if thats all you've got I'm cool with that  |
