I am allowed an opinion am I not? We over here are regularly updated on the EXCEPTIONAL weather that you are experiencing so really the photograph is no justification for expat pensioners getting that allowance. To put it into perspective we have just had a visit from friends who live over there and they say that last winter it was VERY warml

The WFA shlould be scrapped, the UK OAP increased by £5 week.
Those under pensionable age where ever they are would lose it.
Those in real need without income sufficient to pay UK tax would see no change again where ever they are.
It is an allowance not a right and could be removed by government when ever they wanted.
As part of the OAP it is permanent and would increase by the annual % rise in pensions.

don't forget the Free TV Licence along with the Free Road Found Licence, and then theirs the Free Council Tax.

and UK has one of the lowest pension payments of the EU, even Spain pays more than the UK.

See the price of a Bombona is up 5% today. We once hired 2 heaters whilst waiting for a part for the CH. We used 2 bombonas in a week!

Does it matter how long someone has been on these forums? You are probably the type of person who laughed at us in the UK when, during "the good old days in Spain", you did not give a fig for us as long as you were OK. Now that things are not so good for you lot you want to move the goalposts! Bring on the haircuts in Spain and you will all be over here like a shot.

it's not exceptional - huge areas of Spain get more snow than the UK EVERY winter - & for longer

I'm with Davidindevon on this one

However I would take it much further,

The poor pensioners in Scotland are colder than the ones in Devon so they should get substantially more than Devon pensioners.

But lets talk also about other benefits.;)

It's more expensive to live in London so shouldn't money be taken off Devon residents to subsidise the Londoners.

Devon is an holiday destination so Londoners and Northeners should be subsidised to go there by the people in Devon who live in a permanent holiday destination.

I'm sure there are lots of other anomalies these Devonians are benefiting from.:frown:

Remember we all paid into this totally unfair system

Re: Expats Heating Allowance - Justified?

There was an interesting prog a couple of weeks ago about the " benefits " enjoyed by pensioners.
As a % of the UK economy pensioners receive more in benefits than any other section of the population.
This somewhat dents the arguement about the level of the basic OAP.
Also remember one of the reasons why some of the Eurozone countries are in trouble is because of their " generosity ".
Is there a lot of snow in Benidorm, Nerjia, Marbella, etc etc.
Scrap WFA make it part of the OAP , stops all the arguements.
I am sure that this will upset a few 62 year olds on their final salary pensions where ever they are.

What planet are you on? Only the over 75's get a free TV licence. Where did you get the idea that UK pensioners get free road fund licences and Council Tax. We pay £158 PER MONTH for our Council Tax. Never let the truth get in the way of a good lie heh!

In the Pyrenees and Northern Spain but do the Costas get much if any? You are being very selective in your answer. How many UK pensioners live in N.Spain/Pyrenees compared to the Costas?

Jeez you are uptight, can't you see it was a joke ?

someone earlier asked what you were drinking, perhaps you should slow down as the rounds seem to be getting larger.

Re: Expats Heating Allowance - Justified?

Yes it is justified because it is often cold, wet and windy, it freezes and snows frequently in many areas and anyway, especially in the more temperate costas, the houses aren't built for it - they are built to stay cool and take a lot of heating.

I see no reason that retired people who have chosen to live in Spain shouldn't get WFA from the UK any more than they shouldn't get their state pensions paid for by the UK.

Or healthcare for that matter. The UK govt pays £3,500 to Spain for every pensioner to pay for their healthcare. Seems obvious that they should give WFA as well.

Let us do a deal. Scots get a little more than Devonians plus they get free fried Mars Bars. Londoners get much higher salaries so we will offset that by annulling our payment for your holidays. Northerners get a free trip to Blackpool annually with pie, tripe and onions and mushy peas included.

When you take your holidays in Devon make sure you do not get bemused by the road signs in Polish!

With regard to health care are you aware that the UK Government pays the Spanish Government the princely sum of £247 PER MONTH per UK pensioner for health care irrespective whether they have had any treatment at all. Why on earth should we be doing that?
