Re: Expats Heating Allowance - Justified?
I'm looking forward to receiving the WFA (if I survive to pensionable age). However I fully expect by then that it will have been removed.
This subject crops up from time to time. There was a programme on UK TV about benefits and that Michael Berk (intentional mispelling) deliberately provoked people by asking "should people in Spain get it?" whilst drinking a cocktail. Of course they should. They paid enough tax over their UK working life and should qualify for it. He should have come out and spent a week living in my house before asking such an inane question - we have temperatures as low as minus 14 degC and very very few houses have central heating. In fact the OP can come out next month and help me chain saw and collect logs for a winters worth of fires. A better question would be to ask. Is the UK state pension level even at £144 pw acceptable? - no it is not. Until it is why doesn't the government administer benefits like WFA on a needs basis? The reason being it would cost more than the benefit to administer. I would remind people that the UK is in a parlous state too, financially and will run out of money in 2016/7. By then bank raids on accounts will be common place throughout the EU including Britain. Who invented the inane phrase of haircut to cover robbery? As in creditors took a haircut over Greek loans, bank account holders took a haircut of 10%, 40% etc. |

So you can make disparaging remarks about me only being on these forums for nine days yet no comments are allowed about you or people who have such opinions that I espoused. Free speech is obviously not something you prescribe to. I have a particular reaso n for taking the stance I have and it is all to do with the total abuse of the system by certain UK expats. |

I am interested to hear how you retired expats can justify being paid this allowance. I would argue that only residents in the UK should be entitled to it. You chose to move abroad so all you should get is your pension and nothing else!
Will you be saying next that we shouldn't get our State Pensions? Even though many of us dont burden the UK with some costs associated with our older age??? Touch of jealousy here, eh? Weather getting you down  |
Re: Expats Heating Allowance - Justified?
I fought to keep the world free and for free speech and we very nearly got it in the UK, but it slipped away
I paid in my NI and took exceedingly little out of it over the decades, I now receive my pension as defined by the Government, with the WFA as demanded by the EU. I am grateful for what I get perhaps they will provide me with a free feed to this UKTV everyone is shouting about  |

In the Pyrenees and Northern Spain but do the Costas get much if any? You are being very selective in your answer. How many UK pensioners live in N.Spain/Pyrenees compared to the Costas? even without snow it gets VERY COLD - we have been getting temperatures around zero at night even here on the coast - & as I said before - the houses are very difficult to heat unless you've lived here you couldn't possibly understand |

Its the EU ... get used to it :);) |

Bitter and twisted eyes like sh#t, a troll crawls slug like from his pit. Rancid and dank; overpowering odour, old stale booze; seldom sober, Brain not working can’t see much, stumbles fumbles using touch, Foul breath rattles gobs up phlegm, can’t blame me; it’s always them, Dirty little demons in his head, Christ how he wishes he was dead, ’Where’s me laptop, I need me fix, there’s me laptop, let’s play tricks’, ‘Who shall I be today’? He smiles, fingers tappin as he compiles Another load a crap appears on screen, as the troll drifts off in his dreams... |

Whilst we would all like a higher pension I would make the point that all expats know what is before they leave the UK and therefore cannot complain afterwards. With regard to the EU raiding accounts they could not do it to the UK because we are not members of the Euro. 33 - Mitzyboy Why on earth would I be jealous? You ask if the weather is getting me down and the answer is that from what the respondents here are writing the weather is much worse where they are so no it is not getting me down. |
Re: Expats Heating Allowance - Justified?
The arguement that " I am entitled , I have paid tax , etc ,. jada jada ", is nonsense, otherwise the wealthy would enjoy higher benefits because they have paid more tax, and the lower paid during their lives would get reduced pensions etc because they have contributed less.
When in fact the reality is that the higher taxed contribute more towards the pensions, benefits of others , We live in a society where once you reach pensionable age universal benefits are not income linked. This should not be the case , included in the basic OAP would make them taxable for those with high enough incomes. This allows government to raise the OAP for the less well off yet regain some of the cost back in tax from those who can afford it. |

Unless you live here you have no idea what the weather is year long. Yes its lovely in the summer months, but for instance since mid January we have had high winds almost constantly. Its been cold, and unfortunately Spanish homes aren't built to be warm. So we need heating January through April and as the costs of electricity is expensive here maybe we should get a higher heating allowance than you lot in the UK  |

Well, I have to say you are trolling. You obviously have no regard for the big picture and just want to wind people up ... which wont work because people will see you for what you are. We're used to having digs thrown at us by the UK media and people who are in the UK.
At the end of the day, I really dont care for the "I'm all right Jack" view of things. Spanish expats get healthcare on the UK, UK pensioners get healthcare in Spain.
