Re: Expats Heating Allowance - Justified?
WFA is a bit of a misnomer now as it is in fact a universal benefit for the over-60's (wherever they live). Now a lot of pensioners depend upon it as an integral part of their income. It was introduced by the incoming Blair government in 1997 as a knee jerk response to a cold winter and to encourage over 60's to vote Labour. I do have some sympathy for EMR's opinion that it should now be rolled into the state pension - that would stop a lot of this emotive and devisive argument surrounding the term WFA and the political point scoring which helps no-one. There is also the fact (mentioned above) that means testing WFA would cost considerably more than any savings acheived.
BTW although state pensions are not taxed they do count against the personal tax allowances (on a sliding scale) so that those on a decent occupational pension and other income do actually pay more tax. As for the Health payments - it should be pointed out that this is a multilateral EU agreement such that each EU MS pays the host country a similar amount to cover health care for its ex-pats. So, the fact that we have considerably more EU expats settled in the UK (eg Poles, Lithuanians, Spanish etc) then the NHS actually will be a net beneficiary of these payments by a big margin. |

Why do you relate not re-locating to being a troll? It is fascinating to read such comments and all I can ask you to do is refer to my reply when Mitzyboy mentioned the same thing.

It is not a forum for people living in the UK, with no intention of ever leaving it, to moan about the benefits that the UK government gives to expats. I suggest you get in touch with a suitable whingers forum in the UK rather than waste our time with your opinions, which I am pretty sure, most of our members will, quite rightly, take exception to. |

I too lived in a small town on the edge of Dartmoor. Neither of my parents were born there, although my father was actually a Devonian born elsewhere and moved there at the age of 14 and my mother was evacuated there during the war. Both my sisters were born there but despite all this we were still regarded as incomers. "Locals" have to have generations of ancestors before they qualified. I can imagine that a scouser, with or without the accent, will be regarded as an alien from a different world :rofl::rofl: |

or unless you just wanted to wind the members up https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/i...wkTbuLzyoh8fKI Ladies I have a particular beef at some expats who totally abuse the system, one of which I have previously mentioned. Because of this I wanted to gauge the opinion of expats in Spain as to their thoughts on subjects such as I have raised. Hence my being on here. Nothing sly, illegal or underhand. Just your thoughts and mine. Please also point out to me where it specifically states that ONLY expats can post on here. |
Re: Expats Heating Allowance - Justified?
I absolutely agree that pensioners should get the FA in Spain. Heating systems are inefficient and sometimes supplementary heating is needed. Despite all the expenditure there were cold pockets in our Spanish house.
However, many of you have only yourselves to blame for antagonism from the UK. Many send out mixed messages, have seen time and time again on here people saying they can heat their spanish house for a pittance, wood for free yadda yadda....Bombona lasts for weeks. You know I am right if you look back. It's nearly always hot and sunny until FA is mentioned. I once said that my heating bill is the same here as in Spain 2 years ago and I am much warmer but a few decided to scoff at that:amen: |
