If he went back aboard, that could have been another life or lives lost, I wonder what the coast guard would have said if he went back on, on his orders and was killed, possibly along with his second mate?

He was ordered to get back on board. He was ordered back on board to give the coast guards more specific info about passengers, their numbers, their gender, age and their eventual disabilities. It was a direct and plain and simple military style order.

He chose to ignore that order. Plain and simple.

What is the general Italian take on his behaviour, press and public?

The ones I've seen interviewed on TV seem disgusted, shamed and angry, though it seems his fancy bit has a good word for him.
She was with him in the lounge as well as on the bridge at one time.
I don't imagine his Mrs will be well pleased.

It's possible he and his officers hurt themselves when they fell into the lifeboat and weren't able to climb back aboard and it being on that angle wouldn't help. :p

The coast guard said to let him know what kind of help they needed, what could he expect as an answer to that one I wonder? Coastguard seemed to be in a bit of a panic

Captain did say it was dark too so it could have been awkward to count everyone in all parts of the ship, and tricky, it being on it's side too. The other thing, with all them coming down the ladder would be awkward trying to go up it against the flow like the coastguard said to.

Oh please. They never "fell". The Captain was not hurt and is not hurt. He has no visible nor invisible injuries. Not even a scratch. The coast guard asked how many people might need assistance. He never asked "what kind of help?" Everybody on board needed help surely?

It's equally possible that some aliens from outer space landed on the deck and cast an evil spell on the ship and its captain.

I mean it was dark so I don't suppose anyone noticed them.;)

That's as good as any story that the Captain has been telling.

Actually it could well have been aliens that damaged the ship in the first place

I dont know what the fuss is about.
He fell into a life boat ..... it happens to us all I'm sure from time to time

It's a completely believable fabrication of the truth ..... if he gets out of this with his testicles intact then he should go directly to the UK and become a politician

and being an Italian, in an Italian judicial system - what are the bets that might not happen?

Without going back and reading all the posts on this subject, one thing I have not noticed is any mention of the watertight bulkheads.

100 years ago the unsinkable Titanic sank.
She was unsinkable because she had watertight bulkheads.
Unfortunately they did not reach high enough within the ship and water was able to flow over the top of them.
The Titanic I believe was damaged over a far greater length of her hull than the Concordia.

Any thoughts ?

Yes, every time I get on the Santander ferry and see those massive open spaces on the car decks.

They may have screwed the front doors together a little bit better, but a hole anything like that poked in the side doesn't bear thinking about at all.

All it needs is a capitano schiletto steaming along the channel and otherwise occupado with one of his blondes on the bridge, to T-bone a cross channel ferry.

On a side note,a passenger video has just emerged from the Concordia with a tannoy message telling passengers to go back to their cabins after the collision occured.

The Herald of Free Enterprise was not a collision but the result is the same.

From "The Wit and Wisdom of Winston Churchill" by James C. Humes:

"Late in his life, Sir Winston took a cruise on an Italian ship. A journalist from a New York newspaper approached the former prime minister to ask him why he chose to travel on an Italian line when the Queen Elizabeth under the British flag was available.

Churchill gave the question his consideration and then gravely replied.

'There are three things I like about Italian ships. First, their cuisine, which is unsurpassed. Second, their service, which is quite superb.

""And then - in time of Emergency - there is None of this Nonsense about Women and Children First.""
