correct grammar and punctuation plea

My other half goes mad when Radio 4 say stadiums instead of stadea (spelling???) and museums instead of Musea!!! If radio 4 can drop their standards then all of us can be a bit slapdash at times!!

OK, so let's accept that txt spk, (sic) sloppy spelling, punctuation and grammar, etc. don't really matter on internet fora such as this but I cannot come to terms with receiving emails written in such a way from so-called professional business people.
If this is how they communicate with their clients and associates what does it say about the manner in which they conduct their business or profession?

I have only just seen this thread, haven't read all the postings but would like to add my thoughts. We come from all walks of life and friendship is a precious gift. When it comes down to 'correct' punctuation, pronounciation, or vocabulary then who is to say what is correct and what isn't. Personally I don't care - I value friendship and 'correct grammar' is at the bottom of my list of must haves.

What you say Liona about friendship is spot on. My very dearest friend is at the other end of the spectrum to me. The first 11 years of her life was spent living in British Embassy's in many countries having private education; from the age of 11 she was sent to boarding school in Canterbury, Kent and taught by nuns until she was 18, amongst her many talents she speaks fluent Spanish, French, Italian and German. I meet her the 1st day I started work in fleet street 35 years ago, she is the personification of grammar and punctuation, I thought I am never going to get on with you. How wrong I was we have been there for each other through thick and thin and in 35 years she has never once corrected me for the way I have said something or the words I have chosen. A real classy lady who also values friendship and knows no barriers and by the way gave me the name crispygirl the first time she spoke to me.

I agree with you Beachcomber, always in work matters there is no excuse for it and one should always be aware of communicating as well as one can. I worked in publishing (advertising) for many years and also in Pathology where clear written communication was as must, but I think we can and have to make allowances for some small grammar and typographical errors (unless you are a proof reader).
I really do hate receiving e-mails using txt but that is mainly because I have no idea what is being said to me, my daughters drive me to disappear with it but that is to days communication. On a website such as this one I think it is something that has to accepted because it is a form of relaxation for some and we are typing to keep up with our thoughts and in my case the old brain can work quicker than the fingers - sometimes.

Crispy - your friend must be a really special person
clever, articulate and down to earth - can't be that many about
You are lovely (even though you disappear with it
I think faster than I type (or type faster than I think
not sure really as I am a trained typist and type at around 100wpm
ask my hubby and he will probably tell you that I think a lot faster than that

Yes she is and when I meet people that have to correct others in their speech I always compare them to her and believe me they are no where close to matching her.
I am dyslexic, when I was younger I had dreadful trouble at school and of course back in the 50' and early 60's you were just thick. When I see the printed word I automatically focus on the middle of the word then read out to the right and then I go to the beginning of the word to see what it starts with but of course by then I have formed a word in my head that is quite often incorrect and then it takes me a few seconds to form the correct word. It is something that I have worked on as I have got older and I cope quite well but still have some problems.
Lionda your not a bad old stick yourself, I'm still trying to load photos to send to you, I will not give in I will get them to you before you pack the PC up.

You make sure you do that Crispy
I found your description of your dyslexia very interesting. Thanks for explaining that. And for your information - I think you are lovely - your way of 'speaking' is unique to you and therefore is you

Never mind. Your explanation rang a lot of bells, as you said in those days people were labelled up as thick but you showed them girl didn't you.
