Yes mostly non-white students, why is that a problem. A mixture of outfits their choice and all looking nice. The "white" female British head teacher looking proud as well she might be.
You didn't post all of the Times article did you!!!!

Yes, all looking " nice" with the females draped in A CHOICE of white scarves, a sign of women's oppression...such young girls too! You wouldn't really be into defending this if it were a typical school would you.

As for the Times link, you can't see the rest unless you subscribe...that's why I posted the one from the DM.

Not oppression if they choose to wear them, you are posting to point out possible faults of a particular school where pupils do have a choice.
Is every woman who chooses to wear a hat or headscarf at a particular time or occasion a victim of oppression?

Sikh boys are allowed to wear turbans in the uniform colours in schools
Jewish boys are allowed to wear head covering if they wish.

Is a headscarf any more a sign of oppression than any other kind of headwear?

What other type of headwear do you mean?

In some countries when a woman shows a bit of hair she risks a beating from the religious police.

So it is a form of oppression, as failure to comply fully, ie if a little wisp escapes, they could get their head bashed in.

It's certainly not like that in Morocco although it might be in Saudi Arabia I suppose - from my experience women don't actually exist in Saudi.

In Morocco many people, both men and women, wear some kind of headgear - the style is usually down to the area they come from apparently - no hint of oppression - it's just a style of national/regional dress.

In Oman and Bahrain the women wore Arabian style dress with a loose headveil and very fetching they looked too.

Lets face it people wear different styles all over the world - nothing necessarily sinister about it.

Come to think of it I did see one woman in Saudi - a Western woman walking along the road. She had a veil on but it was only a token - it didn't cover her hair so even there it doesn't seem to be too much of a problem.

Dear oh dear.

We should never forget that some things are just as taboo here on B.E. as they are in Saudi and similar places.

Some quite interesting reading though, for those who aren't so desperate to sweep it all under the carpet.

So Nuns wear the usual headgear, is that a sign of female oppression.
In some jewish secr women cover their hair.
In a catholic church it is the tradition for women to cover their heads.
We all know what was behind JT and het=r supporters comments but of course they are not brave enough to admit it.

Are you brave enough to reveal the real reasons behind your post.
Would you have been so vociferous if the school in question was a Plymouth Bretheren, or Wee Kirk.
As for your " ban " symbols are you really that afraid of anyone who does not agree with you.
Are you against freedom of expression, or do you only pay lip service .

I don't know how 'bravery' comes into it.

After all we are talking about words on a screen, not standing up to machete wielding thugs.

I will state however, I am not religious, but out of all the religions Islam is by far the most oppressive and brutal one.

Converting from Islam to another religion is punishable by death, that says it all really.
