I mentioned 'Asian' once in my last post (bloody heck I'm not dead yet ), what is your problem?
Chinese are Southeast Asian by the way. Trying to make the point that Asia is a continent. For example, this is a British expat forum, not a European expat forum. Do you not call yourself British?? Why lump other nationalities together? (Infact they are all British)!!!! Their nationalities of origin are different. Just for interest what do you call children of mixed British and Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi nationality origins??? (South/North/or Southeast are all Asia). |
Re: British standards ???
Fee paying schools may keep a few places back , but we are talking about the state education system.
Children do not have all the same abilities and potential and to deny a bright child access to a good school because they live outside of its catchment area is wrong and unfair. |

He's not alone, you've been known to mention a few times.;)
I think it just shows great disrespect to ignore the nationality origin of a person and 'lump' all together. Greeks, Italians, Maltese, Spanish, British etc. think of themselves as distinct don't they? |

In my case, I call them my nieces and nephews.
Over last 4 decades we have spent time in Spain most years, one child lived in Madrid and Malaga for some time, we were never considered as anything other than British!!!! |
Re: British standards ???
Wouldnt we all be better off if everyone got a decent education, irrespective of intelligence? What could possibly be bad about that? Not everybody would succeed equally well in academic terms, but that isn't really the point. The point is what education does for you as a human being.
Surely the people on these estates you speak of who don't care about the quality of their children's education don't care because of the very fact that they never got a good education themselves? Bit of a self-perpetuating system, isnt it. Nobody should need to be bussed anywhere, and decent education should not be a limited commodity that you have to test into or buy into. By all means test out of it for academic measures, but of what possible benefit is it to keep a portion of your society poorly educated? |
Re: British standards ???
We need like or not, our poorly educated people to do the mundane everyday necessary jobs that society needs to survive.
Years ago we needed the poorly educated for canon fodder. |

Then perhaps we should not criticize and ridicule them at every opportunity, if our plan is to keep them in that situation.

Re: British standards ???
I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's evident from some expats warped view of the world that it's Spain's loss and the UK's gain that so many now live the life in the sun.

Re: British standards ???
Very True, again this year there are more university applications from girls.
I agree with LIW that everyone deserves a good education but not all benefit from the "same " education. Many children are turned off because they cannot see the benefit or grasp an academic based system. The majority of us only have our own experience to fall back on. In my case we had streams with some having a higher level of crafts, woodwork . metalwork, cookery etc, girls had typing and shorthand. But then off course there were jobs for almost all of us when we left. |
