Hopefully all i have done is broaden the matter a little, as CO and Islam will not allow women priests or teachers of the faith.

But then who would have thought that Henry VIII would have started the Church of England - truely heresy back in those days, for which he was excommunicated IIRC.
However that is how religion evolves, albeit more slowly than the Instant Communications of today's busy world. Similar happened later in the UK with the Wesley brothers in the 1700's who founded Methodism, which then was picked up by the American black's and became the basis of their religion.

I am sure many would not be happy to realise how much the UK has been an influence in the spread of religion and fostering the splinter groups that provide religion to many.

So far as i am concerned if religion is what floats your boat, keeps you on the straight and narrow, provides you with the support you feel you need, then it doesn't matter what its name is.

However, it could be the time for Islam to stop using certain horrific means of keeping the people down - this went out of fashion with the Spanish Inquisition.

~
Domino ... well put.

Very nasty indeed. I think it goes to show the validity of street petitions in general as much as anything else.
I do sign petitions, only if I believe in the cause. I´m sure many people when approached are simply pleased to realise they aren´t being asked for money!
I find it hard to believe that people sign this petition in fear of upsetting other cultures!

Do you really find it hard to believe that some people are more afraid of being called a bigot or racist than challenging "culture".

I don´t find it hard to believe, I have a feeling that some who signed the petition don´t care about damage being inflicted on the poor girls involved, as long as they look like "tolerant and unbiased" to the outside world.
Pathetic, downright pathetic.

Yes me me. I do find it hard to believe.
I don´t believe people would sign a petition advocating female castration in fear of being called a bigot or a racist.
I do however believe that programmes are often made for sensationalistic reasons whereby the truth is a minor factor.
The young and jumped up reporters career often taking front seat to reporting accurate and factual news.

If this discussion is focussing on womens rights, what about the social and political pressures in China to have one child and for that to be a male child.
Resultng in tens of if not 100,s of thousands of forced terminations ever year where the famly already has its quota or the child is the wrong sex.
Or in India where unwanted female children are abandoned or suffer even worse abuse and degradation, or the recent selling of female babies aming the Roma populations of eastern Europe.
To target or demonise any particular religion is avoidng the real issue that in almost every society women to a multitude of degrees are treated as the inferior.

The thread is about Britian, the petition was signed on the streets of Britain, and women are being discriminated by the own religions in the UK.

It has nothing to do with only being alllowed one child in China.

There are enough "wrongs to right" in the UK, without getting involved in the Chinese " one child policy."

Wthin the Chinese community in the UK there are atititudes which fal well below so called " British Standards ".
My wife works with a very well educated chnes girl whose engagement to a another UK resident chinese was broken off by " his " parents because of 1) her age ( late twenties )and an monor health issue could a possbly affect her fertility and ability to provide children who would look after them in their old age.
Me Me you cannot condemn Islam in the ay you do unless you condemn its attutudes to women on a global basis.
Just because such thng happen in the UK does not make them more worthy of condemnation.

I can condem whoever and whatever I want.

And the thread is about standards in the UK. I am not saying that the things that happen in the UK are more "worth of condemnation" as you put it.

The UK cannot stamp out all abuses by different religions in the 4 corners of the world, but they certainly can/should stamp out disgusting practices in the UK.

Big difference.

The UK is often accused of meddling in foreign countries, I am suggesting that they protect British citizens in the UK who are suffering these rituals.
