British standards ???

People forget how recent this stuff is. Women's rights in Catholic Ireland, for example, and the appalling way women were treated being sent off to the residential institutions in virtual slavery for real or imagined sexual activity. Or, indeed, in the U.S. where racial segregation was legal and practiced as late as 1968, never mind the illegal lynchings.

I must say I'm surprised that those who are alert to the ever-present threat (as they see it) that sharia law poses to the fabric of British society seem to have missed the news that one aspect of sharia has been officially introduced into British life this week, launched by the Prime Minister himself - and you couldn't get a more "establishment" endorsement than that.

The fact is that womens rights (if they ever had any) has gone backwards thanks to the preachers. What was the first law to change in Egypt after the so called Arab spring...men could have more than one wife..great democracy innit

Except that the Muslim botherhood that wanted to broaden the scope of religous laws in what is a secular society in Egypt has now been removed from power.
In Turkey the same moves by relgious based parties are meeting with street protests and the ever present danger of a return to miltary rule which is deeply opposed to to any changes .

Cliche alert!!!!
Recognise any of these?
rob Peter to pay Paul
as long as a piece of string
sink estates
the have nots
flying pigs
And they're just from your output over the last two days. If one removed the cliches from your posts there would be precious little left.

In fact, several straw men. Ie: You are responding to a point I didn't make, but that you are pretending that I did. Which is a bit pointless, and not really a discussion at all.

Guardian is running a report tonight "uk must act to halt mutilation of girls" featured on SKY news.
Nothing though compared to womens rights in the UK 90 years ago

Sadly the usual band of apologists keep reverting to history lessons about who did what to who and when and why as a pathetic excuse for present day wrong-doings which does absolutely nobody any good at all and simply opens up old wounds.
Unfortunately when it comes to facing up to Present day issues the old Ostrich head in the sand trick still seems to be the order of the day or otherwise yet another boring history lesson.
It's like watching a virtual carbon copy performance of today's weak and wobbly current bunch of mainstream UK politicians who rather than face the issues that matter are constantly shaking in their boots in case even a single word they utter could cause offence in any way at all and be joyfully pounced upon or else wrongfully interpreted by the ever hawkish PC brigade.

Er, that wasn't personal that was an excerpt from The Wasteland by T.S. Eliot, which I posted in relation to the Straw Man argument for obvious reasons. I don't know why you assumed it was about you.

You should never use cliches in serious writing, but it's essential to do so in TV and film scripts because they are a reflection of real life and in real life people use them all the time.
So in a discussion like this and others on this forum, how serious are we?
I suppose it depends on the topic. The vaginal mutilation of under-age girls in some parts of the world sounds a serious enough topic, but equality between the sexes must leave room for a bit of innocent humour.
A relative from the UK told me of shops selling burka dolls, something you could easily get upset over, but I thought it was hilarious.
I'm not sure I could have read The Female Enoch or anything else by Germaine Greer without laughing out loud and feeling extremely sorry for a lady not comfortable in her own skin.
