Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

No you're not daft but I am. When I reread my post I didn't see it, hence my last post. But now I re-read it and it's clearly there. Just ignore me!

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

Ooops that was meant to say £70 thousand , not £70!! And the £70,000 has to come from UK clients - if you make that much but some of your sales are to other countries, you don't need to register.

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

In the UK, you do not need to incorporate either. Just register as self-employed and that's that. (That's how they collect stats). It's the same here - I had to register with the county I live in to...

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

Maybe it's all relative. I've always found huge cities to be unfriendly. But I come from a small community where everyone knows everyone and everyone helps everyone else, so I'm judging against that....

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

I guess it depends on what you value. I can't imagine why anyone chooses to move to London. It's easily accessible from all over the country without subjecting yourself to sky high prices, stress,...

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

Perhaps it's just the people I know, but I haven't found the UK to be behind the US at all. But then again, my dad had his own business, as did his dad, and my great grandfather started it all with a...

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

Yes, and my family came from France and Ireland just a few generations back.

Immigrant-bashing is so predictable in a bad economy.

They say small businesses in the US have a 50% failure rate...

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

Is there a filter I can apply that removes all the "immigrants get a free ride" posts? It's boring and offensive at the best of times, but particularly inappropriate on a site whose membership is...

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

Why do you think they are behind? In my experience the UK has lots of entrepreneurs and doesn't need us to tell them what to do.

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

I don't know if entrepreneurial spirit is exactly the same in the UK, but there are certainly people running their own little businesses. I was just watching a show yesterday featuring a family who...

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

I understand. I've been trying to do the same - my observations come from my family and friends rather than from newspapers, but I think we're all on the same page - trying to learn.

I think one...

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

The negativity is only one aspect of Brits though, and I think that's why we can want to be back among our own kind while also being irritated by aspects of their personality. Its like a family. You...

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

You know, my friends are far from wealthy but they seem to have tons of time for holidays and weekends away. It amazes me actually. One is in the US right now on a two-week trip around the Western...

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

Don't forget the time he gave Gordon Brown some DVDs, only - in true American style - his staff hadn't realized that DVDs are region-specific, so Gordon Brown couldn't watch any of them. That...

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

My mother is one of those two million. She gets irate about the weirdest things that have supposedly happened in America (but actually never did). Like the time President Obama repeatedly insisted on...

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

I would add:

4. Thatcher's deregulation of the financial industry.

Which ironically, IMHO, led to the exact situation the UK finds itself in today. Ditto for the US, which went through a frenzy...

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

So, so true.

I mentioned here before that I found an old letter from a former college professor. She wrote it to me in 1991, a few years after I has left the UK. I had clearly mentioned that we...

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

Do you really think things are different anywhere else? Try paying $1,500 a month for health care coverage that still doesn't cover everything and have it go up 20% every year without fail.

The...

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

But you've told us in the past that these people are only coming to the UK to get benefits and a free house. In fact, you said it again in this post. How can they be living high on the hog courtesy...

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

Just for balance, I feel compelled to counter that there are those who would say that financial disaster started back in the days of Thatcher and Reagan, when they assured us that deregulating the...

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

It's interesting but Canada has suffered from the recession less than either the US or the UK. They didn't allow the same rampant capitalism in their banking sector and so they weren't hit as badly...

Re: To those who have moved back, whats it really like ?

I wouldn't live there either, but to reiterate that things are not as bad as they're made out to be, I'll tell you that several of my friends live in the greater Bradford area. They all have lovely...
