Wonder when there wasn't a time. Although one should acknowledge that live for many in Britain is not and has never been easy.

Two (actually three) critical events took place to improve things from the dreadful predicament that the UK found itself in around that time in the late 70s as manufacturing declined:
1. The arrival of North Sea oil
2. The big bang - and the preeminence of London as a global financial centre
which then benefited other UK cities and
A matter of opinion - 3. The reining-in of the destructive actions of some powerful unions
And some new groups such as youth and graduates have never seen it so hard to find any employment.

I would add:
4. Thatcher's deregulation of the financial industry.
Which ironically, IMHO, led to the exact situation the UK finds itself in today. Ditto for the US, which went through a frenzy of business deregulation under Reagan, continued by Bill Clinton, that ultimately led to the collapse of the economy in 2008.

2 million well-informed Daily Mail readers every day. 7.5 million if you count the top six papers.

My mother is one of those two million. She gets irate about the weirdest things that have supposedly happened in America (but actually never did). Like the time President Obama repeatedly insisted on calling BP "British Petroleum" in a deliberate snub against all Brits. Only he didn't - he actually said it once and then a spokesperson apologized. I tried to tell her this, and even sent her links to articles with the true story, but all to no avail. It must be true, because she read it in the Daily Mail

Don't forget the time he gave Gordon Brown some DVDs, only - in true American style - his staff hadn't realized that DVDs are region-specific, so Gordon Brown couldn't watch any of them. That was seen as another slur by The Daily Mail.
