Re: Case Processing Pilot Ottawa Timelines- please add your experiences

BC PNP. I don't think it was particularly fast - there were some very quick applications - some within 6 months earlier on in the pilot.

Re: can we take our wine

We were told no liquids, so gave all our wine away before we left. But then we did arrive here via the States, so maybe Canada is less paranoid.

Re: british passport renewal

We got our children's passports renewed a few months ago. Bit of a nuisance having to send the pictures back to someone in the UK to sign, but otherwise no problem really. It took the six weeks they...

Re: Canada vs UK, a subjective comparison.

I think the main difference re the things happening/progress is that things are just way more signposted in BC. In the UK we tend to concentrate more on the disruption aspects of things like road...

Re: What sucks about this forum?

Personally I think this forum just doesn't have quite enough members, so it can be a bit cliquey with lots of banter and in jokes going on. Which of course is great if you are a frequent visitor and...

Re: Had it with this place - do not move here

Really? Our Vancouver office is in Richmond, it always seems very pleasant when I visit. Of course visiting is different from living. There were parts of London and New York too where I really...

Re: What sucks about Canada?

Ha ha  yep, it's a funny old route we took.

We really like it here, but if we had looked harder, and my husband hadn't decided North America was the place to be I am sure we could have...

Re: What sucks about Canada?

I suspect it is totally dependent on where you live, given the huge differences in geography and outlook across Canada. For me in BC the major downside is that going home or having visitors is very...

Re: Can anyone tell me about the Canadian Computing Industry, and rate our chances?

Oh, and I'd also bear in mind that although there are still shortages in many areas of IT many companies (including where I work) have recruitment freezes at the moment. That means they may be...

Re: Can anyone tell me about the Canadian Computing Industry, and rate our chances?

I'd say that if it's really important for you to have a job you enjoy, and your partner's skills are more portable, then look for a job for you first, and then move to where that job is based....

Re: Had it with this place - do not move here

But you aren't saying anything that is of any use to someone thinking "shall I/shan't I" about coming out here, because you don't give any reasons for your unhappiness - you don't even say where you...

Re: SIMPSONS UK REMOVALS

Sorry that you had such a bad experience. We used Simpsons to over to the States last year and were very happy. Certainly much better that the American/Canadian (Atlas) movers who brought us to BC,...

Re: Stick or auto for driving test ?

Yes that always seems the best approach. When I took my test in the UK I had to do a real emergency stop (dog ran out in front of the car) in the first five mins. The rest of my test only lasted 10...

Re: Stick or auto for driving test ?

I asked my local school what they recommended, and it added up to $450, for three hours of lessons plus 45 mins before the test and the hire of their car for the test. That just seems an excessive...

Re: Heading to Whistler? part2

Weird, I looked at the site hoping for something interesting (in a bored voyeuristic sort of way you understand), and found a fairly standard, although nicely made community website, very useful for...

Re: What's the Canadian countryside like?

We live in interior BC, and access is no problem. Occasionally you'll see signs saying 'Trespasses will be shot', or something similar. I don't know whether these should be taken seriously or not,...

Re: KIDS BRITISH PASSPORT RENEWALS IN BC-INFO PLEASE ?

Yes, it was the two year thing that was the problem for us (we've only just been here a year now). The embassy seems to have updated it's prices and only done part of the job. I suspect you'll have...

Re: KIDS BRITISH PASSPORT RENEWALS IN BC-INFO PLEASE ?

Six weeks for renewal. You send them off to Washington: http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/passports/

Actually I see it's only 10 days now, they've obviously got through their backlog.

It is...

Re: Stay at Home Fathers

My husband is a stay at home dad, and seems to be happy with it. It's certainly very nice for me! I think it's fairly unusual for a dad to be full time at home here - my daughter certainly said that...

Re: Skype and reticent relatives

That's only because of the scale. For a home system all you need is a modem, a computer, a phone, broadband and basic line rental. Then you pay a flat fee per month (I think we pay about 13 pounds a...

Re: Work in Canada for over 30s?

To be honest I'm not sure that you'd get an LMO for being a bartender/waiter, although you never know I guess. What about your girlfriend coming over to the UK?

Re: Work in Canada for over 30s?

I don't know much about the marriage side of things, but what are your skills? A Temporary Working Permit could bring you over to Canada if you have a skill that's in demand and a LMO (labour market...
