Default wine!

Wine in Canada:

I've read a few comments about the price of decent wine in Canada. A program I listen to on CBC called House Wine reviews a different wine each week. Here are some of their recommendations:

Do any other BE denizens have decent wine picks or sources for good wine?

For routine consumption and good value we usually go with Celliers des Dauphins Carte Noire Cotes du Rhone. It's no Grand Cru, but at about $11 in the LCBO, it's reliable and affordable.

Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1998 is one of my faves for the occasional tipple.

Ditto plus! But at $240 a bottle it had better be good!

This is of course presently a purely academic discussion as one cannot buy a bottle of wine in Ontario today. Ridiculous!

How was Cancun?

I feel your pain on the wine front. I remember arriving in Mexico on election day in 2000. Not only couldn't you buy a bottle of booze but no alcohol sales in restaurants or bars either. Not a pleasant evening.

Cancun was excellent. We enjoyed an excellent Christmas dinner overlooking the Caribbean without any combination of yam, pecans and cheese being present

Luckily I did bring back a bottle of duty free Stoli so that will have to suffice until noon tomorrow when I believe the LCBO may briefly re-open.

Pint this week?

Christmas day wine consumption was a disappointing Chilean Cabernet/Shiraz, today at my Brother and Mother-in-laws was a more pallatable Italian Cabernet. I had bought my father a rather nice $50 bottle of Shiraz to drink during his visit, but since he caught H1N1 at an inconvenient time, my folks ended up not visiting us this Christmas. I suspect it wont last until whenever they next do visit.......

Our easy drinking wine of choce at the moment is this:
Imported and distributed, in NL at least, by a friend of another B-i-L who is ridiculously young to be having fun as a wine importer.

I have a soft spot for a nearby vinyard. They have a Port ($20 for the 08 but grab a 1996 if you can find it)
but I really like Their Vidal Icewine. Its quite sweet, I'd say its a nice after dinner sipper.
Won't break the bank at $25 either. I recommend the 07.

I've had that and it's good. Actually at the risk of confusing 2 threads, a (half) bottle of Henry of Pelham Vidal Icewine that I took along with the missing 2005 Bordeaux yesterday did make it to the table. At $19.95 it's very good value.

This is a fruity little number, will keep well if stored in cool place.
