Police checks do not appear to be listed anywhere in relation to 457 visa on the DIAC website or form 1066 whereas the other requirements are quite clearly stated i.e. references, x-ray,...

No they are definately not needed for the visa application.

However, your employer might ask for them for there own peace of mind if for example you will be nursing, working with the vulnerable...
