Where to live in Perth?
Hi all,
I'm a new member of the forum but I've been quietly reading for some time now. I'm moving to Perth in May, and I'm wondering what would be a good place to rent a place that's not too expensive. I'll be working around the Belmont area.
I know this question has been asked many times in relation to family's who are moving out to Perth, but I am a single 29 year old who doesn't know anyone in Perth , so I'm wondering if I should try and live somewhere lively, like Subiaco or in the city centre itself, or go for somewhere near the local beaches, which also appeals to me. If I did live out of the city, it would have to be near a train line, or within affordable taxi journey distance, as although I drive, I also like a drink and the two don't mix well obvilously.
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Dave

As for where to live, well i think that depends on where you work if you are not wanting long driving/travelling distances.
NOR is very quiet so if you like a good time i wouldn't live there. My opinion only, but it is very family orientated up north, although some will disagree.
I prefer SOR. But i don't live there, not yet anyway..
Good luck.

Re: Where to live in Perth?
Myself and my partner live in Subiaco and we love it. There are a few pubs & clubs there which are worth a look. Its pretty lively in comparison to other suburbs.
The city is on our doorstep and its easy to get to Cottesloe and Freo - which are also great spots.
The downside is that its expensive!!!
Good luck with the move.

Going in a different direction (ie further from the beach...) would be areas like Mount Lawley,Inglewood,Maylands, again a fair amount of rental property, (probably a wider range price wise, but you do get what you pay for...) some fairly good, pubs/restaurants around, close to the city and trainline nearby.
Good luck!
Steve
PS: you'll be just in time for Winter

Re: Where to live in Perth?
As others have said Subiaco would be a great place to start, a lot of it will come down to what budget you have, relatively to the UK rental prices here are very cheap and relative to the cost of buying the property here, there ridiculously low. I would imagine you'd probably be looking for a apartment or unit, Subiaco has plenty, another suburb just outside of Subi (walking distance) is Jolimont, there are a few apartments dotted around there that are slightly cheaper options than Subi. Clarememont would be somewhere else to consider, Mosman Park being another futher down the Perth to Freemantle train line, both with a fair amount of rental apartments/units.

Don't forget about Sunday sessions in Cottesloe too, they can be fun.
Money wise, everything, pretty much is on the increase in rentals and purchasing. Take a look on www.realestate.com at rentals as well as buying. You might want to consider a hostel when you first arrive or a house share which are good options if you want to meet people!!!
Good luck!

I live in Freo and loved it here when i first visited on a working holiday visa and like other posters have mentioned, Subi is great as is Claremont, all of which are on train lines.

Re: Where to live in Perth?
Hi Dave ...we live in the Belmont area and unfortunately the nearest train stations would be Burswood or Bayswater. If you rented a place in the city or Subiaco it would mean a train ride and then a taxi to Belmont. Even further if you were in a seaside suburb...difficult one this

One of my friends wife here working for westpac and the advice is.. don't buy anything at this moment.. If you do a round trip anywhere is perth, you will see the amount of "House Open" boards. May be it is the best time to move to perth and wait for the crash. I am also waiting for the housing crash here in Perth and may say it won't take long.
