.....strict rules and regulations to rent out, I think they want tourists to use the hotels so keeping people in jobs and collect taxes, not to rent out private property to benefit foreign owners.

Thanks interesting, that arrangement works out well for you and as you say it doesn't have to be expensive, have driven down a number of times both ferry to Calais and Caen, agree the ferry to Spain...

No idea, would be thinking of staying mainly in UK so resident of UK staying just short of six months in Spain, driving I suppose could stay over in France for a few days.
