Re: Townsville, Cairns or Adelaide?

Lived in Adelaide (3 years) moved to Cairns. We prefer Cairns and the tropical north.

Re: What streets to avoid in Downtown Cairns?

I live in Cairns. It is lovely, but certainly has some troubles now. To be honest the CBD at night has a rough reputation and the police are trying hard to crack down on it. The demographic has...

Re: Pool & Spa to Tariff 33

Hi

Yep I did it but from a new pool build so I had the lines put in ready. I'm sure I got $350 back from Ergon?

Anyway, there are two important things to know. Whilst true that the pump doesn't...

I've reached a whole new rudeness level on the job front

I'm actually quite stunned by this but that's because I'm probably taking it personally.

I'm now quite accepting to not hearing back from prospective employers re applications etc as that just...

Entering UK on Aus passport - do I need a visa?

Hi all,

Probably a daft question but, when travelling back to UK on Aussie passport do we need any entry permits / visas?

(and for the obvious question - our UK passports expired ages ago and...

I read about this in the local Cairns paper last week...a dedicated FIFO coordinator to be based here.

Re: Swimming Pool Comparisons

Recently had one put in, FNQ.
8m x 4m concrete, priced at $28K, included filtration system and lighting. Had 4 quotes from concrete ones and found they were all quite close, although the larger...

Re: Tour Down Under Adelaide-been ?

It used to go straight passed my old driveway. The Mclaren Vale/Willunga stage, forget the number. The event is cool, but quite a lot of hype. The build up seems to last for weeks and then over in a...

Re: Somewhere with a village-like 'feel' in Australia?

If you haven't been before you're going to find one of the biggest differences is the shear size of the place. Distances can be huge! In UK you can measure distance by 'time' as in 'about half an...

Re: This has to hurt?

I can't say for everyone, but I know that my entire workforce (all 1500 of us) did.

Also, lots of us have high savings too, so in truth, things are looking quite good really.

There are always...

Re: Advice please on Landscaping

Do the turf and planting yourself (turf is cheap - $4 sq.m, but plants can be costly) Those quotes are high and probably reflect mostly labour costs. Not that technical a task.
Get the demolition,...

Re: Advice please on Landscaping

I have renovated a lot of our places and can say it does take a lot of your time. Also, unless you are really skilled in the tasks, you'll find that you don't quite get the quality finish a time...

Re: Is 2.2 salary conversion accurate going London to Melbourne?

I struggle to comprehend the apparent challenge some will face with their new $$ income when talked about in annual salaries alone. Maybe if we highlighted something more mundane it would help show...

Re: Roadtrips in Australia

We love them too. Most recent one was when we relocated from Adelaide to Cairns, clockwise the long way round. Took 5 months, 28,000km's vast majority off road (4wd and off road camper trailer). Many...

Re: HSBC Internet Banking

That is true. This one will probably fail soon enough and as you say, must plan ahead of you intend to bank away from where you usually store the device. Commbank offer a phone text secure key...

Re: HSBC Internet Banking

Yes it does. I've had one for about 5 years. It's just a battery powered mini device (key ring size) which issues a string of unique numbers (probably an algorithm specific to you) Each time you log...

Re: Anyone else feeling down with no luck for jobs ?

I wasn't looking for casual jobs, but my partner was and she did struggle too, although she has since given up to have our first.

Should point out that we both have quite a few yrs Aus work...

Re: Anyone else feeling down with no luck for jobs ?

It is depressing - but stick it out. It took me just over 5 months up here in FNQ. Worst feeling was not hearing back from people. Most ridiculous reply came from a job application submitted early...

Re: Can you get 100% mortgages in Oz??

I think you're right, if not even a bit conservative. It won't go far if anyone intends buying a house. 50,000 uk is about $75,000 now. A $350k house would chomp $70k off that on a 20% deposit. And...

Re: Water Tanks - advice please

Hi,

After a few years owning a farm in drought stricken South Aus and an irrigating permit I have plenty of feelings about the cost of water. We also had well over 15 thousand gallons of rain...

Re: £100k Buying a car, ship it to Oz, sell it for Oz dollars?

I have just bought a brand new euro car (Landrover, so technically UK) for the real sum of 14,000 pounds ($21K) more than I could have back in uk, at today's rate.

I'm so grateful to be in such a...

Re: £100k Buying a car, ship it to Oz, sell it for Oz dollars?

WTF? It's a bloody British car in the first place. I'd be happier knowing it was serviced by aston martin UK than anywhere else.

How can Aus compliance standards be more stringent than the UK...

are your chicken fillets the right size?

We've been here a few years now and I'm sure my wife's chicken fillets weren't as big back in UK as they are now. Either I've forgotten what a UK breast felt like or these Aussie chicks are getting...
