Re: Flight costs to UK in August?

Try to avoid stopovers with the kids, but we were debating combining it with a vacation (i.e. time away from my parents place) - were thinking within the UK, but maybe we should do somewhere in...

Flight costs to UK in August?

Hi everyone, it's been a while since I posted here, but I still check in every few weeks or so.

Anyway, I haven't travelled to the UK in the height of summer for a long while, and I wondered what...

Re: Cars not repaired after accident

I did well out of the first car I bought when I came here. End of 2002 I bought a '99 Mazda Protege with 49000 miles on it for $5000 cash (it was a manual and I think the dealer was glad to get rid...

Re: " Americanism's " Changing the British language.

I was laughing at a friend here who said Nootella, he sent me a link to their official site which said that's how you say it; I sent him back a link to a British advert from youtube (searching...

Re: WTF?

I had just found this article which says that: http://www.temimi.org/2011/05/myth-busting-cholesterol.html but I wasn't sure about the source.

Re: WTF?

Mine was higher than that - something like 245 and 145 (or thereabouts). I eat home cooked meals, usually take my own lunch to work, both including plenty of fruit and veg. I don't drink soda at all....

Re: WTF?

I was recently told that too and I'm only 37. I eat pretty healthily (actually probably very healthily, especially when compared to a lot of people I know), and exercise 4 times a week (cycling and...

Re: Virgin Wines rant

I remember calling Virgin Wines one time to find out something and spoke to someone in the UK (in Norwich if I recall correctly), perhaps as they have grown they have shifted where they provide their...

Re: Virgin Wines rant

I've been a member of Virgin Wines since November when I had the same offer. My miles were in my account within 5 days.

I have had nothing but the best customer service, and the wines are...

Re: Help!

While it might be fine for getting into the US, what nobody has talked about is what happens when she wants to get back in to Canada. Presumably the expired passport would help, but what is the...

Re: Classic headline, but then... what does that say she has tattooed on her arm?

You're probably right, it's actually quite sad I suppose - she must have some major issues that she should probably try to sort out.

Of course, if there's another meaning here in the US I may be...

Re: any brits near Edison, New Jersey?

I'm close by, in Highland Park (me, American wife, and 2 kids - almost 2 and almost 4). Edison covers a surprisingly large area, so you may or may not be very close.

If you're looking for things...

Re: SSN needed to Buy a Car?

You obviously missed my post - I did successfully register a car in NJ towards the end of 2002 (after the Patriot Act was introduced), approximately 5 months before I had a SSN (in fact I was on a...

Re: SSN needed to Buy a Car?

Unless the rules have changed (quite possible) then there is no requirement to have a SSN. I would be inclined to call the NJ MVC to clarify, they were very helpful when I went through this:
New...

Re: SSN needed to Buy a Car?

I went through exactly this in NJ years ago. You can buy a car as long as they have proof of insurance, getting insurance in NJ in 2002 was a bit of a nightmare, but it may be easier now. I actually...

Re: Auto Insurance

I got my initial insurance while on a visa waiver visit (just before I got my visa). 3rd party insurance on a small car was about $3000 for 6 months.

Edited to add this was almost 10 years ago.

Kinder Eggs Banned: I'm so glad the US is protecting us from this

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/womans-candy-egg-seized-border-20110110-145449-459.html

Very important. Although we need protection from American "chocolate" more than this, so maybe they need to shift...

Re: Child Born In US Obtaining US & UK Passports

As far as I am aware the only time you need to enter the UK on a UK passport is if you are planning to live there (which sounds like the reason you had problems). The US is a bit stricter about it...

Re: Child Born In US Obtaining US & UK Passports

I wondered about that, but why would they have hassle if they constantly maintain a British passport - surely they don't have to prove everything all over again every time they renew it? If they've...
