CAn vouch for Avis. Have used them a couple of times, good deals and good service. No problem if you want to keep the car longer and they will deliver it to you door and pick it back up.

Beautiful place, but as one of the most sought after areas you will have to pay the premium. Public transport should be OK it is quite adequate all over the UK.
