Hi, we are both postdoctoral (her PhD and me MD) and doing postdoc fellowships, I was a medic/lecturer in the UK and my wife had finished her first postdoc. We found our jobs through job hunting...

Re: Brits in Wisconsin?

My wife and I are research scientists and we are in the US on "exchange visitor" visas called J1, which are easier to get than say H1Bs but are time limited (maximally 5 years), may have a...

Re: J1 renewal difficulty - renewal ? Canada

No, they do not. She needed to be granted an extension by her work - that has been granted. Her boss wrote the official letter that shows she will continue to be employed until 2022 in her current...

Re: J1 renewal difficulty - renewal ? Canada

Due to the adoption process starting ideally as soon as the child is born, we would really like it to be all in place before the child is born. Of course we can delay everything, travel after the...

Re: J1 renewal difficulty - renewal ? Canada

Well, we will definitely want to travel outside of the USA between Feb 2019 and Feb 2022. Our families are not here and we do not want to be "stuck" in the US for the next 3 years. We are academics...

Question J1 renewal difficulty - renewal ? Canada

Hi all,

I had not been around for a good long while and I have a somewhat complicated question. My wife and I (same sex couple) are living in the US on J1 visas (we came in with our own J1 each)....

Re: Foodie thread...just for fun

I am not saying they don't have brunch - just saying I don't like it as much as I did the places back home (or the diner types I had encountered on holidays). We have gone to 5 brunch places and so...

Re: Live & work in NY/JC...I need a social life!

We have been in Boston/Cambridge for 10 weeks now and I found that my work people are very nice but if I want to do something socially with them I have to set it up myself. They will then come and...

Re: Foodie thread...just for fun

Our diet has not changed much since arriving - we have always mostly eaten home cooked and everything is available. We have a StarMarket, a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's all in walking distance of...

Re: Familiarisation visit. Any tips please?

When we came over we went to a great airbnb - not only was it cheaper than a hotel, the people who owned the house were a wealth of knowledge and support. They didn't have to be - we never expected...

Re: Regrets on moving to the USA?

Majorly seconding this. Why can't she move? Is it because of her mother?

Generally I am all "you will regret what you don't do, not what you do" but in your case - I feel like you are chock-full...

Re: Regrets on moving to the USA?

I have only been here a month - and I came with my wife for better (or let's say different!) jobs. We are on J visas so the idea is to return home BUT we are not British (we are German citizens who...

Re: Secondary school advice after returning to the UK

I can't comment on the curriculum - but the social thing is extremely individual and I don't think that seeing your kid in their used environment will give you a good clue. I was moved across...

Re: Talk to me about Philadelphia, please

I am in research and come from a clinical background (not nursing, I come from medicine, but same difference) - depending on your field of research it might be much easier to find a research nursing...

Re: Talk to me about Philadelphia, please

Hi RollingStones,

Re: Health insurance - I am so confused!

Ahh, the plot thickens!

Apparently (?) J1 holders can only get low deductible insurance by law, so the high deductible plan may not be an option at all.

Re: Health insurance - I am so confused!

Sorry you are of course right - I meant HRA comes with the insurance and HSA or FSA or whatever is the one I can opt into/open.

No HRA vesting on my plan - it rolls over but the max is 1500, so...

Re: Health insurance - I am so confused!

As far as I can tell the HSA has no vesting period - if we do not use the money, eventually it just goes byebye. But it is fully funded by work, I don't have to pay into it - they pay a yearly max...

Re: Health insurance - I am so confused!

Thank you so much guys - this was really helpful and after much number crunching it makes sense for us to go with the low weekly, high deductible, particularly since their medication cost policy is...

We do want to have a child at some point but we...

I have to choose my health insurance - it is through Harvard Pilgrim in case someone has had it before and has any advice and it gives me 3 options.

Re: Moving to the USA - Selling in UK, Buying in USA, financial advice required!

I can only sort of answer question 2 in your last post: I found that finding a job (in medicine/academia though!) was surprisingly easy.
We had saved up and braced ourselves for me coming over on a...
