Re: Second Class Citizen

That's great Siouxie, I'm genuinely glad for you that you received the support.

The fact stands that Canada has a serious racism and discrimination problem, study after study has proven it, but...

Re: Second Class Citizen

Oh yes, and the absolute kicker of it all is that when you do mention the problems you get told to move out of Canada if you don't like it.
Well I bl00dy well can't as I'm now medically inadmissible...

Re: Second Class Citizen

This reminds me of the old but true saying about white privilege, if you haven't noticed it that's because you're experiencing it.

As Millie and others have said, you can be the most Mary Poppins...

Re: Nurse and GP (and a puppy) looking to move to Nova Scotia/Ontario

Have you ever fancied moving to BC? There have been a few threads recently about Doctors getting certified and moving to BC and it didn't seem like a hideous process, or especially lengthy in terms...

Re: Nurse and GP (and a puppy) looking to move to Nova Scotia/Ontario

Thank you, and I'm sorry if my post(s) sounded condescending, they weren't meant that way.
Your husband does have one advantage over most of the Doctors I know (all of whom have left NS now) in that...

Re: Nurse and GP (and a puppy) looking to move to Nova Scotia/Ontario

I should have added, I'm not that kind of Doctor, but yes you would need to get certified again if you moved province.

A friend of mine (a genuine one not one of the "friends") who is a medical Dr...

Re: Nurse and GP (and a puppy) looking to move to Nova Scotia/Ontario

Something to be aware of, Nova Scotia is beautiful, it's a tourist destination for a reason and at face value people are friendly, it seems like a nice place, good facilities etc.
How are you going...

Re: Second Class Citizen

I've been thinking about my previous post and I do feel the need to mention that perhaps its a Maritime thing. I've met people from Manitoba who say they same thing about Nova Scotia and who've moved...

Re: Second Class Citizen

The trouble is as well, is that as soon as you mention this stuff to anyone you get the shocked, horrified, aghast "What????!! But Canada is such a tolerant place" Not on this forum, but in real...

Re: Second Class Citizen

Thanks always busy. It does hurt, and having our child witness it is what makes it so bad.

We've lived in a lot of very racist and intolerant places before Canada, including Jo'burg. Canada is up...

Re: Second Class Citizen

:goodpost: I couldn't agree more, this has been my husband's experience too. The "ahhh but you're..." is word for word what he's had at work.
The walls of the Gurdwara in Halifax was recently spray...

Re: Few q's about moving to rural canada!/off grid

Knowing about something and living it are as different as night and day, and no offense but you will be babes in the wood. That's all well and good, and emigrating is always a learning experience...

Re: Few q's about moving to rural canada!/off grid

That's truly horrifying, the pain your husband must have been in doesn't bear thinking about.
I don't think you realise just how vulnerable you are until you live off grid or remotely, and...

Re: Few q's about moving to rural canada!/off grid

Good grief Scilly

I had a similar experience when we were living off-grid. My husband had gone into the town to get some stuff and was helping another of our friends out at their house in...

Re: Few q's about moving to rural canada!/off grid

Oh I couldn't agree more, I was just surprised that Canada, which in my experience is pretty lenient on EI claimers, fraudulent welfare claimers etc (could just be the Maritimes which suffers this...

Re: Few q's about moving to rural canada!/off grid

It is expensive to set up an off-grid property, even if you're doing it Amish/Mennonite style, which I assume OP isn't as they mention wanting appliances.

If you are setting up an off-grid...

Re: Few q's about moving to rural canada!/off grid

I completely agree with HG's excellent post, if you're looking for a simple like and want to go off-grid you are seriously barking up the wrong tree.

People tend to romanticise off-grid living...

Thanks, yep that is more accurate .

To be accurate, I don't consider them friends anymore, neither does my husband, but when your kid is good friends with their kid, or goes to hobbies and...

Re: Emigrating and medication advice

Do have a look at Costco pharmacies too, I have friends on Synthoid who say it's much cheaper there than anywhere else.
You don't need to be a Costco member to use their pharmacies either.

I agree, I've experienced the same and even had some pretty disgusting comments from friends who couldn't see anything wrong with what they were saying.

A lot of friends and acquaintances were...

Re: Moving with no plans

Have you looked at the possibility of managing a remote fishing/hunting/camping lodge?
Lots of them want live in caretakers/handymen, they pay fairly well and your food and lodging are included.

Re: Five years and homesickness increasing..

Truro?!? No!! I'd be like Crocodile Dundee in the big city if I went there.
I don't know many people who've ventured as far from home as Truro, and a considerable number have never been to Halifax...

Re: Five years and homesickness increasing..

The driving is another thing here, I don't know of anyone over legal driving age who doesn't drive and have their own car, its very common to have four/five cars per household.
You'd be a bit bored...

Re: Five years and homesickness increasing..

Well, funny you should say that but here the Legion suppers are very popular with the teens. Facebook and man buns also seem to be where its at.
