Re: Dishwashers, DVD's, Fridge...what works in Oz??

The last thing I did leaving the UK house was to vacuum the place (as you do when moving out) then spend 10 minutes cleaning (washing and wiping) the outside and the inside of the vacuum cleaner....

Re: Buying fridge-freezers in Bris?

Ground has a much higher thermal capacity than air i.e. the same amount of energy (heat) produces a much smaller temperature rise, so below the surface it stays cooler than the air above....

Re: West vs East Melbourne

And equally wrong to tell someone not to live in them. Some of them, yes, others, no, and the same for the east and the north and the south (oh no that's all sea though, glub glub glub). East versus...

Re: West vs East Melbourne

I wasn't talking about where you live. What gave you that idea? I couldn't and wouldn't, I've never been there. You know the kind of areas I mean, I bet you've driven through them often enough.

Re: West vs East Melbourne

Yes there are scummy parts of the inner N and W areas. But so there are in other directions (Dandenong anyone? Not even an inner suburb either, so it loses on two counts). And let's compare like with...

Re: What Electrical Stuff Will Work?

Briefly:

radios: yes
hair-dryers, kettles: possibly (it's 10 amps here, not 13, so 3kW stuff won't work)
TVs: maybe
light fittings: same size bayonet and ES

Re: West vs East Melbourne

Picking names off the map are you hevs? (Sunshine is not what its name would suggest, I'll grant you.) But still there are plenty of unattractive/soulless suburbs all over the place (and many people...

Re: Socks

And the needles on the beach. (Ref. the very recent incident at St. Kilda. They claim it was unusual but I've seen the revolting crud that accumulates on the high tide line there.)

Re: Better Quality of Life - A Pipedream?

Just be sure you realise what the climate is really like. It's not just a question of its being a bit sunnier or a bit more predictable. Consider whether you really want to be forced to stay indoors...

Re: Better Quality of Life - A Pipedream?

As anywhere, prices in Melbourne vary tremendously. The same house can cost twice as much in one area as in another, and while the high price is obviously driven by demand, it's equally obviously not...

Re: Australian/UK Partnership - Are we ever happy?

First of all, emphasis on the seem to. We are, on the whole, discouraged from expressing our problematic feelings.

Secondly, men are (slightly?) more likely to be the ones going out to work and...

Re: Grape Nuts

Isn't puffed wheat sweetened? (I have no idea really. I'm just thinking of Sugar Puffs and the like, nasty stuff indeed.) Grape nuts aren't. Well they're malted, but they haven't got any added sugar.

Re: Grape Nuts

I haven't seen them anywhere either. They're one of the few things I occasionally get a yearning for, so if anyone spots some anywhere (in Oz I mean) let me know!

I fear that Crunchola would be a...

And we've got the 15th Melbourne Queer Film Festival here next month. (Hmmm, maybe that's just showing queer films, as it were.)

Re: House Price rises UK v Australia

That's one enormous can of worms you're opening there. House price changes vary hugely from area to area. There is no one simple (or useful) comparison.

Is this idle curiosity (you, idle?) or are...

Re: What you love about Victoria

Aussies and Brits have rather different perceptions about what constitutes "small" (and hence "comfortable travelling time", as touched on in a recent thread).

For reference, Victoria is the same...

Re: 3 reasons not to move to OZ

English banks may not charge for so many things but they often offer lower (read "practically zero") interest rates. Swings and roundabouts, then.
Intolerance is everywhere and comes in many forms....
