Re: Australia over Xmas/NY?

I would say you're unlikely to find yourself amidst drunken party madness, unless that's what you're looking for.

At Xmas/January time of the year the reality for most of us as we get older and...

re: Shrimps On The Barbie

Back in the day forums had places for social discussions that I guess have been replaced by social media now.

I joined BE as a 34-year-old (how young I was!) back in 2004 while living in a flat in...

Re: Sponsor , help on proffesion degree IT field- V's No Degree but experiance

Perhaps, but I was thinking more of my experience of generally poor customer service and no sense of urgency. Imagine the staff at your local RSL trying to work the bar in a Dublin pub at a weekend....

Re: Sponsor , help on proffesion degree IT field- V's No Degree but experiance

Hello,

The best answer would be to have both. A degree would also be useful if he ever decided to have a change of career, even in an unrelated field - it gives him an advantage over someone that...

Re: IT employment market UK vs Aus

It's all about communicating effectively. Some people are better at it than others. Toastmasters (District 70) (http://www.d70toastmasters.org.au/) is great for improving skills in this area. [end of...

Re: Rental dispute

This is good advice. Any landlord SHOULD know that tribunals tend to favour the tenant in these kinds of disputes, as sadly there are two many landlords who treat their tenants with contempt and try...

Re: cockroaches in my flat...

Umm, Chatswood?

I rented a house there a few years ago and we had loads. You just need plenty of baits, especially around your kitchen. They are a fact of life - some places worse than others.

Re: Canberra. How come...

Well, anyone can cut and paste from WIKI, why not just put in a link.

Also, the truth is:

- The Yass-Canberra "area" (quite large) was chosen for the capital in 1908
- Scrivener surveyed this...

Re: Partner Wants to go back to the UK

Answer's in the question.

Your partner wants to go back home?

Then let him go.

Tell him you're staying but he's free to go if he really wants.

People can react badly if you one day stand...

Re: Any families in Australia living on combined gross income of less than $100,000 a

I don't think there was any offence, not to me anyway.

One of the things that difficult to gauge in online forums is the (perhaps unintentional) tone of your reply. I got just a hint of...

Re: mining in australia! ANY INFO/ADVICE NEEDED

Going to Australia to make money "working in the mines" is a modern myth.

You need experience in the industry or the associated trades to make it in the door. They may be crying out for people,...

Re: Robey1978

I had relatives move to Christchurch from the UK earlier in the year (post-earthquake) and they hated it. Moved back home 9 months later. Found it very expensive and not all they'd believed it was...

Re: UK State Pension

But once you take it, the amount in pounds/pence is fixed - not indexed linked, no increase ever. The only variable would be the exchange rate and the effect this would have on the dollar amount you...

Re: Any families in Australia living on combined gross income of less than $100,000 a

Hello. What's right or acceptable for you and your circumstances isn't necessarily the same for everyone else.

The reality for a lot of people is long-term mortgages to make repayments affordable....

Re: How to reduce living costs?

Don't know if it applies to you, but the biggest expense of living in Oz in the burbs is two plus cars. Definitely try to get by on one if you're a two-car family. Some inconvenience, but for a lot...

Re: Whats the worst beer you've ever tasted.

Anything from the tap in a pub called the Wig and Pen in Civic in Canberra.
Ugh.

Can also vouch for dreadful hangovers from VB, Tooheys New, and Carlton Draught.

Re: Carbon Tax: Julia Gillard a Bare Faced Liar?

When did you take "ownership" of this thread to decide what or what isn't a "side issue"?

Perhaps what you mean is, "starting from that point doesn't allow me to present my 'angle',...

Re: Arrived in Canberra, ACT

Nope, Aussie partner, she had family there. And it was 2004/05, so not recent. But I had a temporary visa and that ruled out a lot.
