Re: Good US virtual mailbox

We use iPostal - something like $99 p/year - they're pretty good, we have 3 names on it - use scan and junk mostly and periodically we have them ship physical mail. For phone numbers, we kept our US...

Re: Confused!!!

I can understand why you feel the need for a lawyer - it looks like an immigration minefield! I will say this though, we immigrated last September - we started the process from our home in the US...

Re: Shipping East Coast USA to UK April 2022

Shipping is certainly expensive right now. We shipped from Savannah GA to Liverpool UK last August. It arrived in the UK on 8th November 2021, cost $15,000 in total for a 20' container including all...

Re: 6 months back

We're on a very similar timeline - we arrived in the UK on 11th September 2021. After 10 years in the US, I returned home with my USC husband who is living in the UK for the first time. We've just...

Re: Goodbye US HSBC - you dumped us

We use Number Barn (it costs us $15/month for 2 numbers), we keep our US numbers which divert calls to our UK phones and email us with text messages. It doesn't help with your banking but it's an...

Re: ToR1 application & spouse visa.

Just a quick update for anyone else in this process - we received our TOR approval yesterday (8 business days), no questions, no hassle. I don't know if the application form has changed recently but...

Thumbs up Re: ToR1 application & spouse visa.

Hi Alison - this is exactly our situation (except my US spouse had his biometrics appointment already and we sent our packet to New York on 6/4/2021). Am I reading your post right, did you complete...

Re: Successful UK Spouse Visa Application

Congratulations! My USC husband mailed his documents to the New York office yesterday so our fingers are now officially crossed. Likewise, we would have struggled more than is needed, I think,...

Re: Where Do Y’All Get Your British Food From?

I usually have visitors bring stuff but, as you said, Covid-19 has meant no visitors this year so I caved and bought from British Corner Shop. The 2 things I buy are Kelloggs's Fruit and Fibre and...

Re: Maintaining a UK mobile number while in the US long term

Is the physical phone you are using locked? O2 unlocked mine for me (despite being under contract in the UK); my husband had a family plan network in the US that he added me to so I used a US sim in...

Re: Maintaining a UK mobile number while in the US long term

First thing I did when I arrived on these shores was have all my family download WhatsApp - it's saved me a fortune. My mum did ring me on my US network once, soon after my arrival. We had a nice...

Re: When do we expect Trump to lift the travel ban against UK?

I'm so sorry I got to this discussion thread late, and missed the abrupt departure of 'Andy'.

But I don't really think it was Andy at all... I think it was the Donald. His skipping from topic to...

Re: Maintaining a UK mobile number while in the US long term

My UK bank accounts are registered to my US home address and US phone number. They always contact me on that, never an issue. I think you're right though, it depends on the bank.

Re: Maintaining a UK mobile number while in the US long term

I moved here 8 years ago, I was halfway through a 2 year contract with O2 so I had a chat with them to see what they could do. They agreed to pare down the charges and put me on a plan they offer to...

Re: Education system in the UK

I taught at a UK high school with a 6th form, students who didn't make the grade for 'A' Level were often allowed to study a couple GCSEs alongside A level studies. That's why I said earlier that...

Re: International Move from UK to USA, Idaho: Removal Firms, Tips etc

It's a while now since we shipped (5 years in fact) but we paid $5,000 (about £3,600 at the time) to ship from NW UK to East Tennessee. We got everything into a 20 ft container (including some flat...

Re: Who else is concerned about trip to UK for Christmas with family?j

Thanks BB, I appreciate your point, I have 2 married kids who will drop off emergency supplies and will also pre-order a grocery list for me before we travel, if necessary. I'm aware that delivery...

I'm really glad she's made such a recovery, that's a pretty tough deal she's weathered. Glad you all have each other for support. It's one of the reasons I want to retire over there, I have 2 kids,...

Re: Who else is concerned about trip to UK for Christmas with family?

That's pretty much exactly our plan - we've found one out in Greater Manchester that has Tesco, Sainsbury and Asda deliveries, lots of food deliveries, with a private garden out back so at least we'd...

Re: Returning to the UK from EU

That's a very fair point. :thumb:

However, at that age, when friends start moving on/up/away, getting married, starting families etc. you could live up the road and still feel left behind....

This. This is what I remember when my dad had back surgery years ago. It was the first time my hard-line-labour-voting dad used the words 'private' and 'healthcare' in the same sentence without...

Re: Who else is concerned about trip to UK for Christmas with family?

This is extremely helpful and very informative. A 4 flight journey is quite the schlep, I'm sorry you had also to do it under such circumstances.

We're planning a trip to the UK in January,...

Re: Returning to the UK from EU

Yep, I've lived in the US for 8 years but go 'home' a couple times a year (except this year). Sure I've missed events, and being able to lunch and shop with my daughter, and can see that everyone is...

Re: Keep USA Health Insurance?

That sounds like a great plan DL, the jury's still out for us on healthcare in the UK; we use Cigna here and have been very happy with them over the last 7 years but it's through employer, so that...
