Re: Stay Here or Go back?

Fish are more important than an individual's right(?) to privacy.
Paraphrasing, but his words, not mine!

Re: Stay Here or Go back?

It's not just the rich list, it's also the seemingly complete lack of legislation around overseas investors buying up property in NZ.

Property here is a finite resource. Development in Auckland is...

Re: Stay Here or Go back?

Yup... That factor has meant issues. When we started looking at moving, we could have got NZ$3.20 for one of our British pounds. When we were finally able to move, it had dropped to below NZ$2.

I...

Re: GCR- update

Hi BEVS!

A little background is definitely in order.

I'm in my <ahem> 'mid-40s'. Milady wife is a few years older, and we have a teenage daughter. We applied for residency from the UK, and had...

GCR- update

Well, a quick update from us.

We're staying. For as long as possible. Summer feels like it's here, and unlike the UK it really feels like summer.

I've found work. In IT... But not where I...

Re: Affordability of houses: NZ v UK

There are all sorts of discussions over a bridge between Karaka and Weymouth - local residents are obviously not all happy about it, but anyone who lives south of the city knows that SH1 is already...

Re: Asians dominate NZ immigration

I've not been here long enough to satisfactorily know how good (or otherwise) individual Kiwi politicians are.

But I will confess to feeling uneasy that John Key has been discussing trade with...

Re: Recruitment/ers

The only exception to this is the recruitment process. Larger Kiwi companies wait 'til they need someone, then advertise the role, then take weeks to decide who to interview, before taking more time...

Re: Asians dominate NZ immigration

The cynical conspiracy theorist in me says that in those days, people were to clever, could think for themselves, and couldn't be controlled like sheep. That's bad for governments.

People were...

Re: Asians dominate NZ immigration

Reluctantly, I agree with this. And hypocritically, it is exactly why we moved here.

Unfortunately (for us) a lot of things changed between our EOI and arriving. Life in NZ is definitely tougher...

Re: Recruitment/ers

Tom - I'll work pretty much anywhere! We're south of Auckland at present, having been assured prior to moving that Auk and W'ton were the centres where I'd easily find work. To be fair, we've visited...

Re: Asians dominate NZ immigration

It's easy to stereotype, but there do seem to be a lot of fish'n'chip shops run by eastern families, filling stations tend to be run by another ethnic group, and so on. I'm certainly not complaining:...

Re: Asians dominate NZ immigration

People entering NZ with a view to living here, but who are unable to speak English, are not (as far as I know - and I am happy to be corrected) meeting the basic requirements for immigrants.

And I...

Re: Asians dominate NZ immigration

Robbie 2010 kind-of makes a valid point. Asians tend to be the focus group when discussions of this nature occur, but there is a reason for this.

Asian (and Chinese, Indian and other) families...

Re: Recruitment/ers

Kiwi CVs are quite different to UK ones. It has taken more rewrites than I care to think about to get my CV to a point where it's regarded as being 'good' by any Kiwi recruiters.

As for...

Re: Where do you want to be buried?

There's a DC3 that flies out of Ardmore near Auckland... The operating crew offer a near-unique solution. They refer to it as 'Celebrating Life (http://www.nzwarbirds.org.nz/dakota/celebrate.html)',...

Re: The story so far...

Being over-qualified hasn't helped so far... In fact, I have twice been told I would not be considered for a role because I was over-qualified!

Had bad news this week. Having spent 4 of 5 days...

Re: Stay Here or Go back?

Napier is lovely. We visited briefly and fell in love with Hawkes Bay generally... But Napier is something else. We love Art Deco, so that may have had something to do with it.

If IT Project...

I'm waiting to hear the outcome of an application for a PM - Data Centre relocations. That is a pretty specific title, especially given that we considered such things to be a part of 'normal'...

Re: North & South magazine - cost of living

That's quite remarkable. Certainly the difference in fuel price over the last 5 years in the UK would be far more significant.

And I've recently seen petrol, here in NZ, for less than $2 per...

I don't know how much it has increased, only that it has significantly.

Re: North & South magazine - cost of living

NZ has it's fair share of problems, earthquakes and all.

Sadly though the biggest problem is that of history repeating itself. Anyone over 40 who has paid some attention to the UK and what it has...

Re: Stay Here or Go back?

Coming from the UK, the interest rates in NZ (while locally low) actually seem high. When we sold our place in the UK, we had been on a fixed rate of 3.95% (might have been 3.99) and I know there...
