I love New Zealand and will never go back (except to visit). The weather in itself is enough to make me stay. This Summer has been magnificent (as are most Summers actually) and it feels brilliant each morning to sit out in the warm sunshine (as opposed to warmish rain/drizzle in Yorkshire) drinking my breakfast cuppa. Never to be stuck in traffic (not in Napier anyway) and to teach respectful and pleasant students who appreciate my efforts on their behalf. Factor in the friendly people, value for money housing (in Napier), and low crime rate. I truly believe I am living in the best country in the world.
England (the North of England anyway) cannot compete. Indeed it comes nowhere near.

Napier is lovely. We visited briefly and fell in love with Hawkes Bay generally... But Napier is something else. We love Art Deco, so that may have had something to do with it.
If IT Project Management was more common, I think we'd be there.

You the same as me. Still at 28, I hope I am able to change that sooner than later. IT looks good initially until you realise you are trapped to cities and the larger costs that come. Its hard breaking that mould, but I think leaving Auckland and moving somewhere cheaper will help with that - especially as my partner is a nurse and I could retrain into something else.
Thanks - I actually agree with most of what you say. Sorry if I have the ability to come across quite negatively at times, its more down to frustration. Being from the far end of Cornwall, Auckland feels incredibly busy in comparison. But the beaches here in Auckland are almost as good as there so it feels like home sometimes

However saying this.. we did visit the display homes on the new estate they are building around the estuary. The 3-bed homes were starting at around $780,000 at the time, which again to me is an astonishing amount of money.
I think there are great places in Gloucestershire and Somerset to have and bring up kids - Bristol probably isn't one of them! Typically most of this seems to boil down to your line of work and where you have to be to do that.

Its nothing against NZ, i do like it here, I just feel like my time here has ran its course if that makes sense, been here since 2003 ( we did have a 2 year gap back home) came back feb 2011 with 10 month old son and 20 weeks pregnant with no2 and just havn't been able to settle, and its made me re-evaluate a lot of things, i have a huge family at home,kids have lots of cousins their age, etc etc, and i just miss home so much. I came to NZ as my husband is a Kiwi, not because i wasn't happy at home or needed a change.
not sure what will happen, only time will tell, i understand my OH not wanting to start all over again,
I imagine we will end up staying here

The other half is a teacher who is full of praise for NZ schools and students.

) I gave up and it was hard to do. I then used to have nightmares that I had started again but waking in a cold sweat, thankful that it was only a bad dream. This has been replaced by another nightmare when I an sitting on a large Boeing heading back to the UK.....thankfully I wake up in Chch.

I've only been her 7 mths, I doubt I would move back to the UK , visit.? yes to see family, but seeing what's going on in the UK now, I have no wish to go back and live. I suppose it's what you make of it her in NZ we have made a real effort to live the dream we wanted, and we haven't been disopionted so far.

We have finally saved up enough to do full scale renovations to the front yard and decks at the house. Was nervous about spending what it's going to cost on the place, but a couple of agents have reassured us that the house is worth at least double what we paid for it originally, so it's not likely that we'd lose the money we are spending on it. I've been quite impressed with the trades we've used so far - tree work companies and earthworks.
And, like other things, we are spending our money on it. I know a lot of people would just re-negotiate their mortgage and whack it on there, but as with other things we've bought like the car, we prefer to save up and buy it outright.

for those that moved to NZ years ago when property was affordable, things seem to have worked out nicely. 
for some who have moved here recently, they have found out that wages do not meet the cost of living and the repayments of a mortgage.For that reason " I'm out ".

I blame the British government and the weakening of the pound!
Regardless, it does make it tough. Recent (temporary) changes by the Reserve Bank of NZ meaning homebuyers now strictly need a 20% deposit before they will be granted a mortgage are also hitting a lot of people. Look at average NZ salaries, average house prices, the price of renting, and many people will struggle to buy (in the current market).
I'm now earning well. Enough to easily borrow more than twice what we might want to. Our rent is about equal to, if not less than the mortgage repayments we would make. And I can't get a sniff of a mortgage because we don't have a deposit, having spent it all on rent and living here while looking for work!
Not leaving though.
