Re: Looking for EU version of Los Angeles - climate, culture

Thanks. Have been discussing the options with my wife. All options look great. One advantage we have that earlier generations of expats didn't have is AirBnB: and the freedom to sample multiple...

Re: Looking for EU version of Los Angeles - climate, culture

20 years in the house. Any city with an Aldi (Nord/Sud)-owned grocery store is blessed.

"Cosmopolitan" - rock concerts, museums, parks, cool galleries, upscale movie theaters.

Re: Looking for EU version of Los Angeles - climate, culture

Thanks for the great responses.

Riviera. D'oh! Why didn't I think of that? Assume the French part is better than the Italian? Or are they both mired in tax-loving bureaucracy?

I am vaguely...

Looking for EU version of Los Angeles - climate, culture

In a sentence, which European city would be closest to Los Angeles in terms of warm weather ("CSa" climate like Seville) and proximity to cosmopolitan vibes (no US-aimed sarcasm, please)?

My wife...

Re: Moving family to Rio

Do a solo recon first, see what you think. I KNOW what you will think! "Nice beach, food, shame about everything else."

Now is not a good time, what with World Cup and Olympics. But if your job...

Re: Where in Australia would you live if your job only required an internet connectio

They pay a lot of tax, but don't mind. In fact I have a successful buddy in Norway who wishes he could pay more tax. Not kidding.

Re: Where in Australia would you live if your job only required an internet connectio

Not to mention the clobbering you take at the supermarket checkout and shopping mall. It's like Norway, but without the sovereign oil fund.

Manufacturing, btw, accounts for only about 8% of...

Re: Where in Australia would you live if your job only required an internet connectio

Boom, bust? When I was first there in the 80s, it was very Japanese. Maybe they stopped coming when the Japanese bubble popped, then went elsewhere (Hawaii, NZ?) and no one filled the gap.

Or...

Re: Where in Australia would you live if your job only required an internet connectio

Admittedly, I just drove through them. But I liked the NSW towns of Kiama (beach), Bowral and Mudgee. Suburban Canberra, too.

Surfers might have been OK in the 80s. I went there a few years ago...

Re: Moving to Brazil... Help!!!

First of all, congratulations on the marriage.

Secondly, don't commit to Brazil without visiting first.

Beyond that, I would establish yourselves professionally in your current location, pay...

Re: New Zealand is not as I hoped

You only have yourself to blame, unfortunately. But helpful advice in this thread can help you turn things around quickly.

1. Better digs in better part of Auckland. Large swathes of the North...

Re: NZ vs UK - not all it's cracked up to be. Is it just me?

Kiwis (I am an expat New Zealander) like to consider ourselves to be friendly, outgoing, relaxed people. But something tends to get lost in translation, and certain gestures or jokes might get taken...

Re: is this the future for young people CURRENTLY in NZ?

Engaged at 17? Expelled from school? Estranged father? This story won't have a happy ending. Move along, folks.

Re: Wanganui or New Plymouth?

I did a rough reverse of what you are contemplating. Spent 5 years at high school in Wanganui after being raised in a nearby country town, and I later escaped NZ to the Hollywood Hills. If it's only...

Re: Buying a property in Budapest

As a matter of interest, did you buy anything? I saw a bunch of places in Districts V, VI, VII and IX during my weeklong stay earlier this month, but found a wide price-quality differential. A lot of...

Re: Buying a property in Budapest

Just saw this, and signed up ... I am in the same boat, and may even be there about the same time. Wise people say you should live in the area for a year before buying. Not sure I could do that. And...
