Re: Help deciding if moving to Maine is a good idea

It looks like the school OP was referring to (Waynflete School) is around $30-35k.

Re: Help deciding if moving to Maine is a good idea

Are you including universities in the word "school" as in American usage? Private universities in the US can cost $60k/year for full-pay students (though many get some amount of financial aid). But...

Re: Thank you!

Trump's letter is chock full of right-wing values: "magnificent land," "sacred," "duties," "assimilate," "pledge allegiance," "patriotism," "heroes," "traditions," "homeland," "loyalty," "God bless...

Re: Thank you!

Quite interesting, plenty of not-so-subtle ideological differences apparent in the language of Trump's and Biden's letters.

Re: Relocating for 2 Year Assignment

I live near Charlotte, it's a decent enough place to live but is a very bland city. The city center is very bland and corporate, and the rest of the area is just big suburban sprawl. The weather is...

Re: British vs. American spelling

Though Americans might be likely to say 'the River Jordan', owing to the enduring influence of the King James Bible.

Re: British vs. American spelling

Good blog post on the subject here. It seems usages like "the Thames River" were in occasional use in England in the 16th/17th centuries.

Re: 2020 Election

A few weeks ago I was saying that Trump had a very good shot at winning the 2024 Republican nomination. It does seem that those chances have dropped significantly.

Re: Netflix Documentaries

I followed Ken Williams' boating blog a few years ago (they were cruising around the world on their trawler-type boat). Very interesting, but Ken once unironically described the owner of a nearby...

Re: 2020 Election

It seems that Trump will almost certainly run again in 2024, and will almost certainly win the Republican nomination (he will be younger four years from now than Biden is right now, after all).

Re: British vs. American spelling

"In work" doesn't really exist in the US at all. The opposite of "out of work" is just "have a job" or "be employed."

Re: 2020 Election

I suppose if the US were a unitary republic with no federalism, all presidential elections would have a clear winner by midnight or whatever on election night, with one candidate up by several...

Re: Built In Obsolescence

I remember reading an article describing Korean engineering as faster paced and less deliberative than the Japanese, which has allowed the Koreans to undercut pricing. That said, LG has for years...

Re: 2020 Election

Hmm, OK. Later they can say, "we didn't have enough time to complete the recount, the race is too close. So the state legislature will have to assign the electors."

Re: 2020 Election

I'm guessing they will just count a small percentage of ballots by hand (the "audit" part).

Re: 2020 Election

"Trump picked up 140 votes over Biden in Maricopa County out of about 6,250 additional votes counted."

I want to thank Christ that Arizona was not decisive for the election. The tension would...

Re: 2020 Election

I get it, you hated him 4 years ago and you still hate him now. I've seen a lot of hate thrown his way, but this guy is a consistent winner and an overachiever. That's what the people who support him...

Re: 2020 Election

I wonder what percentage of provisional ballots will not be counted (people showed up to vote who were not legally registered to vote, but still cast a provisional ballot). I think it can be quite...

Re: 2020 Election

This is kind of fascinating; Biden might win Arizona by 1,000 votes or something. I feel bad for the Fox News analyst who called Arizona for Biden late Tuesday night. I guess they were assuming...

Re: 2020 Election

As far as I know all the states have abandoned those problematic punch-card type ballots that became infamous in 2000. The common system now of electronic voting with a paper ballot printout is far...

Re: 2020 Election

I'm still wondering, is the huge partisan divide in absentee vs in-person voting enough to get Trump re-elected? In-person voting is much more dummy proof. All the less-competent Republican voters,...

Re: 2020 Election

Well if more people had 'Voted!' for Hillary in 2016, there would be a progressive majority or supermajority on the SCOTUS right now.

Re: 2020 Election

This is puzzling to me also. Many of these urban county governments in the Atlanta area are dominated by Democrats. Are they not in control of their own elections offices' budgets? Can they not...
