Re: Random Question - kids and sports

Our son was 8 when we arrived out here 3 years ago. I also was worried about him settling in, most parents would, also knowing his character/age I knew he would find it difficult. I was right, he had...

Re: Newmarket, ontario

We live about 30 mins south of Newmarket but I seem to spend quite a lot of time there (friends, kids activities etc). It is as others have described, I would say better shopping and sport facilities...

Re: Canadian v British Education

I can sympathise, we arrived here originally for 3 years (although now 3 years later, it seems it will be more like 5!). You do have different considerations when you know that you won't be in a...

Re: Canadian v British Education

No problem! I was asking all these questions myself before heading out here, especially because we always knew we would not be staying in Canada permanently. However we have even now transferred my...

Re: School Catchment Areas

Generally catchment areas for elementary schools are pretty strict. But exceptions are made, especially for the schools with a lower intake who have capacity. worth asking individual schools, more...

Re: General advice on registering for schools / good areas - Ontario

We moved out here with my husband's company with 2 months to prepare, so in comparison you've plenty of time!
They will be fine, it has been an amazing experience for both my kids. The elder one...

Re: General advice on registering for schools / good areas - Ontario

My eldest was 8 and my younger one 4 when we got here. I knew that the 8 yr old would find adjusting the hardest, due to age and personality, and I was right. The best thing I did for him was getting...

Re: General advice on registering for schools / good areas - Ontario

Clearly worth checking, as it varies depending on where you live. In my daughter's case, the only entry point for FI is grade 1, and it is total immersion until at least grade 4. Its an option that I...

Re: General advice on registering for schools / good areas - Ontario

Regarding schools, it is true that Canadians expect most kids will be fine at whatever local public (ie state) school they attend. It's true that league tables are not considered as much, but that's...

Re: Where to live in/around GTA?

Sorry perhaps others would have better first-hand knowledge of that area...however you wouldn't feel too isolated as you'd be quite close to Barrie. As a day tripper, we have visited Wasaga Beach...

Re: Where to live in/around GTA?

Most ski slopes I would think would be nearly 1 1/2 hours drive from Caledon - north towards Barrie/Collingwood you have Snow Valley as well as Blue Mountain. There are other smaller slopes such as...

Re: Where to live in/around GTA?

I live in a decent sized, practical family home which we rent, with yes a smallish garden but enough grass for kids to play and big deck for BBQ, pond and parks within short walk. Like I said its a...

Re: Where to live in/around GTA?

I would say that your budget for renting may be pushed a little in the Richmond Hill/Newmarket/Aurora area for the size of house you are looking for...I'd say you'd be looking at over 2,000 dollars...

Re: When are doubts more than that?!

Well we had the opposite experience with our son, if that helps?! He was super-excited at the thought of coming out to Canada before we left, no worries about leaving friends behind as they were...

Re: When are doubts more than that?!

Everyone adapts differently in the family situation. My daughter fitted in from day one, she was 4 when we arrived. My son had a tougher time, he was 8, he's now changed school and is finally much...

Re: When are doubts more than that?!

I was never champing at the bit to come to Canada, we were asked to head out here 2 yrs ago for husband's work. After lots of mulling over, I realized that I would always regret NOT going if we...

Re: Depressed or just lonely?

I'd agree with most of the comments above. Two years into our life in Canada, I'm definitely not as lonely but it has taken a lot of effort and I've had to learn to enjoy my own company more! I've...

Hi
Does anyone know more about Air Canada's newest venture, Rouge, other than the usual media blurb?
It sounds like a budget arm, to compete with Air Transat. For UK visitors coming out here to...

Re: After school clubs / sports clubs ?

We pay $300 ish for indoor/winter season (Oct-April) but more like $900 for may-august. That includes full kit, coach, venue, pitch & tournament fees etc. I think that's fairly standard for rep...
