Re: I think Canada Post is getting desperate...

I think those bags of flyers are delivered by a separate company, or they are in my area at least. You would think they'd respect a 'no flyer' notice too but who knows.

My husband (postman)...

Re: NHS or Provincial Health Care

My favourite was the one with several NO SMOKING stickers and signs on his door. Because everybody rolls up to the GP surgery with a fag hanging out their mouth.

Oh and this!

Painkillers that...

Re: NHS or Provincial Health Care

Awful.

I wasn't on Quebec medical insurance at the time but I did pay a visit to a walk in clinic in 2011 for a urinary tract infection and unrelated excruciating abdominal pain (I paid out of...

Re: Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill

I'm not a lesbian but I did raise an eyebrow at the use of 'lezzer'. I didn't think it worth raising when there are bigger fryable fish in this thread. I'm not offended by it but I also don't really...

Re: Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill

I would have thought the rejection of the term 'lady' is more to do with the connotations of the term rather than it being gender-specific.

I'm not an expert on matters of feminism at all though,...

Re: Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill

I agree (that not causing intentional offence is good manners).

I'm sure there are examples out there of people/governments/whoever going to clearly unnecessary lengths to avoid causing offence,...

Re: Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill

I saw some fascinating comments on the BBC website, not even trolls but seemingly genuine earnest commenters, saying things like "well, my 30 year marriage means nothing now" (WTF?) and...

Re: Visiting the USA from Canada Options

Because they would have no record of you leaving, unlike when entering by land and getting the I-94W, which would be surrendered either way (in theory, but not necessarily in practice I gather) when...

Re: Visiting the USA from Canada Options

I was under the impression that this was a problem, i.e.

Fly in on ESTA, then drive out = not OK
Drive in on I-94W, then fly out = OK

And I feel like I've read something official to this...

re: Timeline For Spousal Sponsorship via London & Inland

If you want a cheaper option for photos there's always http://www.epassportphoto.com/

I was also renewing my UK passport around the same time as putting together my PR application so getting all...

Re: Air Canada - Rouge

I wasn't suggesting anybody try to do that, just to be clear! I came across the discrepancy when trying to find out if it would be cheaper to book flights to Seattle or Vancouver if taking a vacation...

Re: Air Canada - Rouge

I priced the new Toronto-Edinburgh route (which requires a connection with any other airline you'd deal with) just to get an idea and I'm tickled that it took the creation of a "low cost" arm for Air...

Re: Bar code in application

I printed two copies of the barcode pages, so that I'd have one set to go on top of the application as required, and one set to be within the IMM0008 form in their correct page sequence. I signed...

re: Timeline For Spousal Sponsorship via London & Inland

Yeah, the landing was great. The people I dealt with were so kind and informative. The immigration officer who signed off my COPR was chatting about how unusual it is to see UK nationals immigrating...

re: Timeline For Spousal Sponsorship via London & Inland

[cross-posted on the canadavisa forum, I'm too lazy to compose a whole new message recounting this tale so just copying/pasting over here, hope that doesn't break any rules]

I can't believe it's...

re: Timeline For Spousal Sponsorship via London & Inland

I got my COPR today finally!

Interestingly, I took my medical on 10 Feb 2012 but my validity extends to 26 October 2013, which is presumably 12 months after the date they processed the last bits...

Re: Tim Hortons - another view

I'm not picking on you here, more the writer of the article, but I struggled to take it too seriously after the mention of the crushed up bugs. Cochineal has been used as red food colouring in so...

Re: 2012 Christmas Tree Watch

I suppose I just don't really grasp why sparkly lights and flying reindeer somehow preclude the quiet contemplation of Remembrance Day. I could bow my head and remember and be unaffected in that...

Re: 2012 Christmas Tree Watch

I saw someone nearby had put up their Christmas tree the day after Hallowe'en.

I read a topic started by a Canadian on another message board discussing one of those copy/paste moral indignation...

Re: Question : Tax rebate when emigrating

Assuming you were an employee, I'm not sure what HMRC could really do about it except assume you're still a UK resident who was simply working for part of the tax year and then not working for the...

I fondly remember the first time I tried using my hairdryer in Canada and got little more than a gentle breeze out of it.

It still might be worth hanging on to your UK straighteners for any...

Re: The Canadian Finance Thread

No authority whatsoever in a Canadian context, and only based on personal experience in a UK context. So not very much authority at all, I grant you.

I'll try to explain my thought process and if...

Re: Why 'community' mailboxes?

It's funny you should mention this as I was talking to my husband last night about this thread and he specifically mentioned this sort of thing, as it is a source of frustration for him as well as it...

Re: Why 'community' mailboxes?

Nailed it. I believe the posties can refuse to attend your house if it is isn't clear and you would be notified to this effect but in reality there are so many uncleared that it's not really...
