Re: Melbourne or Gold Coast

I love the Gold Coast, I much prefer it to Brisbane but lots of people will tell you its crime ridden and tacky (and it is in certain areas, especially Surfers). I've lived on the coast for 3 years...

Re: HELP PLEASE NEIGHBOUR RUINING HOUSE OPENS

I'd go for this too, we sold ours using private viewings, found many people at opens were nebby neighbors or not looking in the correct price range.

Re: Melbourne or Gold Coast

That's a personal opinion and not mine, I'd choose the Gold Coast over Redcliffe (or Brisbane) every time - and I have to work in Brisbane, so live on the North end of the coast (Hope Island), 1 hour...

Re: Medic on the Gold Coast -HELP!!!

Glad you enjoyed your visit, many people will have you believe the Gold Coast is like Sodom and Gomorrah but of course its not, personally I think its the nicest city in Australia, I've seen all the...

Re: Living on the Sunshine Coast but work in Brisbane...

We do it daily from Sanctuary Cove on the Northern Gold Coast, about an hour each way but I wouldn't want to go any further, this is driving, add 20 mins each way for the train (and the trains don't...

Re: Buying a property - valuation

Depending on the market start low, you say its a sellers market, still 5% under asking sounds a little high to me. Once offered 20% below ask, which was rejected, we moved on and it eventually sold...

Re: IT contracting in QLD. How?

I'm an IT contractor working in Brisbane and like everyone else says let the agency pay you PAYE, maybe look into salary packaging too.

I had a Ltd Co in the UK, ignored IR35, paid myself a...

Re: Melbourne Interviews, its a funny old game

As someone who's lived in Aus for over 10 years in total and had several jobs in that time I can say its absolutely nothing like the UK, not better, not worse, just different, and that takes some...

Re: Family moving to Brisbane - worried about the cost of living

For short term accommodation Brisbane is one of the most expensive cities in Australia IMHO, hotels are more costly than Sydney. Usually during school holidays the city is a bit cheaper.

Re: Goldcoast!!

I wouldn't go near Surfers at night either! Broadbeach is nice if you want the bright lights though, where I live is suburbia, albeit on the water and close to the beaches too :)

Re: Goldcoast!!

We live in Hope Island and commute to Bris for the same reason (no work for me on the GC), it is a lovely place to live but after 2 years the commute is wearing thin!

I'm also "From the toon" or...

Just out of interest (we may move to Bris from GC) which suburbs are you referring to?

Re: Scotland to Brisbane!?

^ Great post, I agree with almost every word, especially the comparable material standard of living. e.g. In the UK I had a convertible BMW and a brand new Land Rover. Here I have a Subaru.

If I...

Re: Dentist costs?

Some people actually travel overseas just for dentistry, I know a guy who went to Thailand for some dental work and flights+2 weeks accom+ dental work still figured much cheaper.

I also find the...

Re: Economy stalling

Check out what happened when the GFC kicked off, the AUD dropped like a rock (30c vs USD???), of course we don't want another GFC (or the current one worsening).

Re: Dentist costs?

I'd guess about $60 and up for a check up. If you need any work its more than the UK for sure. I had a root canal a couple of years ago and seem to remember it was about $800, some of which my health...

Re: Want PR? A transfer to Brisbane from Melbourne is required – what are the positiv

They're pretty different. Conventional wisdom says Melb has more culture, Bris is more outdoorsy (warmer winters but humid in the summer).

Its such an emotive issue though, people tend to feel...

Re: My QROPS Super

Yes you can. Its fairly easy and your new super fund should be able to tell you what doc is required, I did it a year ago and I've forgotten :)

Re: On arrival places to stay

We stayed at the Oaks Goldsborough on Darling Harbor as it was near my job at the time. Not the absolute cheapest place in Sydney but back then it was pretty good value for Sydney CBD. I'd rate it as...

Re: Byron Bay or Noosa?

Visited both for long weekends recently, they're very different.

Noosa feels a lot more upmarket, Byron still has the hippy influence (and the road is seems jammed a lot of the time). Lots of...

I'm heading off to San Francisco for a work trip end of this week and staying for 3 weeks. This is the first time I've been to the USA since we moved to Australia 3 years ago and I'm wondering with...

Re: Where in Australia would you live if your job only required an internet connectio

P.S. Byron is lovely, we just got back from a few days there, but there's plenty of drunken trouble in town on a weekend, I was surprised to hear its right up there in the violent crime stats.

Re: Where in Australia would you live if your job only required an internet connectio

Agree with this, whilst I wouldn't live in Surfers (I would have 20 years ago), the greater Gold Coast offers plenty of lovely suburbs.

They wouldn't by choice (unless they're crazy), but when the banks re-open chances are Capital Controls will be in place, meaning only small withdraws allowed every day, and limits imposed on...
