Dentist costs?

I needed a filling replaced, but saved it until I went back to the UK. Got it done on Christmas Eve, for £100, inclusive of emergency procedure fee, new patient registration fee and general check-up.
Very pleased, as I was quoted $375 for it here in Sydney, and that was assuming it was a basic filling, and nothing else needed doing.
My ex-GF's cousin is a UK trained dentist here in Australia, and he said last year that he has never seen so much unnecessary dental work billed out to patients - so much so that it actually made him feel professionally uncomfortable with the practices he has been locumming in.

I'm blaming this thread - started getting severe toothache over the Australia Day weekend (try getting an emergency dentist over that weekend) - went to my dentist Monday, cost me $100 - short story I need a root canal, sent me to a endowhatever it is. Went today, got the quote $2100, plus another $1300 to do the crown after....My healthcare has a maximum of 800 / year.
I should have been a dentist..

My youngest son might be having a brace on his lower teeth. I should imagine it will still be on by the time we arrive in Australia August/September.
I assume will we have to pay privately for it to be tweaked then eventually removed, anyone any recommendations/ advice on this matter please?

We moved back to the UK in late December and on January I bit some crab shell and lost half a tooth - was very glad it decided to wait to alert me to the problem!

Well, for NHS dental charges... There are three NHS charge bands:
* Band 1: £18.50 covers an examination, diagnosis and advice. If necessary, it also includes X-rays, a scale and polish and planning for further treatment.
* Band 2: £50.50 covers all treatment covered by Band 1, plus additional treatment, such as fillings, root canal treatment and removing teeth (extractions).
* Band 3: £219 covers all treatment covered by Bands 1 and 2, plus more complex procedures, such as crowns, dentures and bridges.

OH has just had 2 fillings done with sedation as he is nervous- $426.
He has to have a root canal and crown, plus 4 other crowns- looking at no change from $10k. OMG.

Going overseas for dental work is exactly what many Australians are doing, you cant blame them when you see what people get charged.
