My boots are seven years old and I walk around 12 kms a day in them. They are fine and cost me around $70. $400 for a pair of boots is an outrageous piss-take, and while I totally agree with you about demanding ever lower prices, $400 is absurd. It's very indicative of the usual Aussie-made market, which is to say totally unaffordable.
One pair of shoes I own cost me about $200-300 (depends on the FX rate) 20 odd years ago and I do not expect to have to buy another pair in my working life.

Internet changes all this. For example, I want a pair of noise-cancelling headphones. Amazon are banned from selling electronic items to Australia. So, I buy them, have them sent to my parents, and my parents will post them to me. All of this is because they are many, many times cheaper in the UK. If they were priced sensibly in Australia, I would buy them here. Same goes for books. Simple.
Is that the same case with Australia or are they completely banned from sending all electronics?
On a side note you could use a company like comgateway.com to handle the shipment for you. I use them in Singapore every time one of the Amazons won't send something directly to me.

Yes I forgot to mention medicines. Walmart has a 99c range. Eg. allergy tabs which we pay $17 for here, identical active ingredient.
We also bring back dental products. A toothpaste kids use is $1 there and $6 here.
Shampoos even, $20 here $4 in USA.
Luckily I have silver FF and they double our baggage allowance, we had 92 kg coming back
Was totally kicking myself we could have done even more.
And could people stop talking shoes and boots. I got two pair of gorgeous suede ankle boots for amazing $20 a pair, some huge sale at the outlets in PSprings. Have been busting to wear them, now weather cools down I break the leg. Annoyed or what!

Jad needs Costco! I don't spend 20 dollars on shampoo!
I think there is something to be said to invest in stuff which you will use longterm even if you don't need it now. As long as it's not senseless spending on luxuries.
